Title: no bull
Post by: deerhunter_98520 on September 12, 2014, 10:02:58 AM
So I was out last night on an evening hunt and was cow calling for an hour with no luck....I stepped it up a notch and started doing estrus calls...and within 3 min a bull came charging in...he destroyed 3-4 trees but would not come into sight...I said screw it and went after him...it was thick and nasty' I had him at 15 yds and would not show himself....I cow called and he wouldnt step into the open so I bugled at him and he just destroyed more trees so I started tearing trees up....we did this till dark and I couldn't see anymore....I was so close I could hear him breathing.....anyone have a similar experience? Any suggestions if it happens again?

If it were me, I would have went silent for a few minutes and backed out a bit, trying to find some sort of area with a little better visibility then started a cow calling sequence to see if you could entice him to come looking for you. I did this once in Oregon last year and the little bull thought for sure his potential lady friends were trying to escape and he came looking for them.

Amazing how something so big can hide so well  :dunno: :chuckle: This happens a lot on the wetside ...walls of brush but when they are so close and screaming it sure is a rush even though you can not see him   You know he is there now ..stick with it

Any way you could get in there mid day and try to at least cut a few shooting lanes or what about a tree stand to get  up a bit?

No trees big enough for a stand.....the trees there now are 8-12ft and are tight....there are little open pockets that give me 10-20yd shots that's what I've been trying to call them into but they won't leave the thicker stuff

Well at least you could see him and know how big he was    :chuckle:

This is what was left of one of the trees

Tough to get them to show themselves sometimes.  I've had them in that thick stuff and never could see the bull bugling at me, and couldn't try a sneak because too many cows were on alert.  Sure is fun though.
