So... This year I am trying my hand to hunting on base... Being that I live on McChord.. It's nice and close. I know there are some good bucks on base as I have seen them from time to time, but everytime I go in the woods all I see are bears. This morning I saw 4 including a sow and a cub. 2 of them even came within 30 yds. I have no desire to kill another bear after taking mine last year. Just not a fan of the meat and I'm not gonna kill it just for another rug or mount. So if anyone has some good deer areas that they would like to share on the fort... I can put you right on top of some bears... Thanks guys..

all over the M4 ranges! :chuckle: :chuckle:
Sorry man I know you're frustrated but I couldn't resist.

HAha. It's all good. Seeing bears is better than not seeing anything. It's actually quite comical to watch them

They are super-goofy sometimes. I would take one in a heart beat - I LOVE bear sausage. I have a feeling though that it's because I had a VERY GOOD butcher do the work.

My girlfriend tells me she sees deer (does and bucks) almost every morning on her way to work from Rainier to Lacy - usually in the vicinity of Spurgeon Creek Road. She leaves her place in Rainier at 5:30ish every morning. I've been working real hard on getting her to tell the difference between a deer and an elk though. :bash:

you might want to give the bear another try if they are that plentiful. If nothing else, take another predator out of the area. bear is either good or bad, not sure if it's what they are eating or the prep but give it a go. I had a catfish that sucked so bad I wouldn't eat another for 15 years. gave it another go and wow was I missing out.

+1 on the Spurgeon Creek road area. Especially the little wedge of land between Spurgeon Creek and Rainier.

I shot a bear 10 years ago near the river. It had been eating salmon in November, so they were pretty ripe. That was the most disgusting animal I've ever gutted, or ate. :puke:. A couple years ago my buddy shot one that had been eating berries, and nowhere near the river. He gave me a steak, so I could see if there was any difference in taste. I couldn't believe the difference. It's one of my favorite animals to eat now. They are pretty easy to hunt, and between my son , and I we can get 3 more this year to fill the freezer, and then some.
Just don't shoot one anywhere near the river with salmon in it. :chuckle:

Not what it was. Neighbor kids from new development behind it have been playing and fort building out there all summer.I drive it often too. I would try 1/4m down road at the hill dropping into flat Rainier side if I was still hunting there.
