Title: It's never a problem untill it is.
Post by: Nice Racks on September 19, 2014, 07:26:02 PM
I spent 21 years in the army and the old "adage" was...It's never a problem until it becomes one. Well, I guess that's true in the hunting world too.  I was lucky enough to harvest a bull this year on opening day, but kept hunting with friends for the entire season without seeing another elk, and barely seeing a deer.  Maybe this is why.  My trail cams have showed several different cats recently.

I've got lions all over my cameras and the deer / elk / moose still hang around.  The cats are EVERYWHERE.  There really is nowhere at all that the deer and elk can go, at least not in my area, to get away from the lions.  I would think there is another reason for the game disappearing.

I heard that a single lion can take a deer size animal a week. Is that true? Maybe there's another reason for the lack of animals I seen.

I guess I just don't get it. Since Nice Racks is doing the same--I tried looking the phrase up myself. Still don't see how its an adage to live by. Reminds me of the phrase "it is what it is." more of an acknowledgement of the reality rather than an imperative to suggest a course of action.

Anyhow, here's to hoping you kill a nice lion soon  :hunter:

It's just another one of those army sayings. Other ones are:

1.  "Stand Fast" (how does a person do that).

2.  "ASAP". As Soon As Possible. Right? Nope. It means right now!

3.  "BOHICA" Bend over here it comes again.

I believe "good to go" came from the military.

:dunno: Most superflous, trite adage I've ever heard in my life  :twocents:

WTF?  Do you even know what those words mean or did you just pick the biggest words you could think of and throw them into a sentence?  Sounds like the kid in English class who can't write but hopes by putting big words in he can get a good grade on his paper!   :chuckle:  It doesn't make sense!

just for funsies I looked up the dictionary meanings for that string of words really its almost a redundancy of adjectives but not quite there is enough disparity to make it useful as a description of ones point of view.

as for the original adage while I dont think anyone said to live by it, it is an adage that rings true with some frequency.

Well to me the phase doesn't seem to convey information worth knowing. The words seem superfluous because the world wouldn't be any less the wiser if those words were never said. They are needless.  It is a phrase akin to "It is what it is." or "you just want to have your cake and eat it, too." No duh. When is anything ever a problem until it is?  When is 'it' anything ever not what it is? Who wants to have cake and not be able to eat it? Such phrases are also quite trite because they are repeated by people who don't seem to evaluate whether there is any merit in their use. Almost as if their common place use lends becomes a justification unto itself.

An adage is supposed to have a proverbial, imperative connotation to it.

My grandfather hound hunted lions and bears for many years and he has only ever shot one.  Let a few others go.  so I would agree a lion is a story to be told.  But don't take away from the kill this year pman.  That buck was earned and well deserved.

Cords ASAP Niceracks!

See you there!   :chuckle:

Not to change the topic, but it is my thread so what the heck.  Hypothetically, if lion hunting with hounds was legal, but using an electronic caller was not, would it be legal or ilegal to play an electronic call of a female lion in heat all night long (you"re sleeping not hunting), go there in the morning and turn the caller off, and then bring the hounds in to see if they can pick up a track of a Tom that was called in the night before? Just wondering if that is walking the gray line or totally ilegal.

What state would allow dogs and not Ecallers?

I geuss if dogs were legal.  then dropping an ecaller to play while your gone would be fine.  unless ecallers of any kind were illegal...

Kind of a weird hypothetical question.

Yea it is weird.  I have a friend that goes out to some Western state every year to lion hunt (not sure which one), and he was saying that's what the facility was going to do this year.  Not really sure if he was BSing or not.
