Title: More beginner's arrow help!
Post by: longstevo on September 23, 2014, 03:44:33 PM
You guys helped me out a little while ago, so I humbly come forth for some more assistance...

I've got a Fred Bear compound bow.  28 in draw.  Tuned to 55 pounds.  Intend on using it elk hunting next year.
2 questions:

1.  I got some arrows from a website, but I don't know if I got the wrong ones or not.
These are what I bought.
Gold Tip Carbon Traditional:  29 inches, 3555/500, GPI 8.6, four inch feather vanes

The reason for my confusion is a friend of mine, who has been archery hunting for a long time, said that they might be too light for my 55 pound (and maybe stronger draw in the future), resulting in bad flight and possibly shot shock.

The main question is are those arrows too light or are they usable?

2.  So I went out and bought some Cabelas Stalker Extreme arrows.
Carbon, 31 inch, 400 55/70, GPI 8.4, 2 in plastic vanes

My main question here is should I get the arrows cut?  I know it is said that the arrows should be approximately 1.5 inch longer than your draw length.  31 inches would be 3 inches longer (not including arrow head).

3.  And final, which is the better arrow?

Thanks!

I generaly cut arrows so they are just past the riser at full draw. The spine on the cabelas arrows is right, the 35-55 gold tips are a little weak. Both arrows are good. Easton makes the cabelas brand arrows. Take your bow in to a shop and have them mark the arrow at full draw and cut them youll want your total arrow weight to be legal for washington. Watch your foc as its critical for broad head flight.

Since your in vancouver have you stepped foot in Archery world? Pro shops generally have good service and are price competitve with other places. (mostly because you are not cutting and putting your own inserts in.)  I have priced out a few of my local shops and must say that if it requires some setup or special tools its generally cheaper to buy from them, or the same by the time you pay ot have them set it up.

I finally called Archery World.  They did recommend that I get the longer arrows cut.  And he did say that the Gold Tips are a little light.  So...is any body interested in buying some 3555 Gold Tip arrows?   :chuckle:
