I was going to head out to a friends house tonight to see if I could call in a couple coyotes that have been hassling his chickens . I have never called in the rain , will they respond during rain ?
-
Rain won't stop them unless its a heavy rain. As long as its not too windy you should be good

I've spent many hours in the rain calling with limited success.
Mostly just miserable setting in the rain not moving around.
Maybe your just more rugged than most.
But the ones that did come in did it slowly not really paying attention to there surrounding's ,made for some close shots.
most I called on rainy days walked the roads to get to my sounds.
seems they don't care to be totally wet either.
If you don't hunt in the rain you'll never get to hunt if you live on the wet side.
Good luck watch the roads.

Thanks guys , just got back and it was raining hard , nothing moving. When I got there he informed me that he had not seen or heard them in the last week . I just started getting serious about calling this last spring but one thing I have figured out is if there is no fresh sign then it's tough , but if there is fresh sign game on .

Yup, every fall, winter, spring there is a massive die off of coyotes on the wet side :yike:, cause they do not eat in the rain, everybody knows that coyotes that do not eat, do not respond to calls. :dunno: :dunno:

To be honest on the wet side I dout it affects them at all. But sound doesn't carry well in the rain. Also its harder to see them in a heavy rain. Over here on the east side a heavy rain may send them running to cover but it won't last long. Rain, shine, wind or snow. They have to eat!

Ain't that the truth

I agree with your comment about sign, if there aint no sign there aint no coyotes.

Right before rain or snow is a good time to hunt them I find. That is for the east side though, I don't remember much about hunting the west side for coyotes. I was pretty young and seeing a coyote was an accomplishment back then.

I guess I should have said heavy rain , born and raised on the wet side , if it's not heavy than it's not really rain :chuckle: . But I'm going to jack my own thread and ask , how many people are actively calling coyotes on the wet side and what is your weapon of choice ? I got into it this summer because of the lack of fawns in the area I deer hunt and a ton of predator sign . But now that I have called a few in ( and a couple bears) its pretty exciting . The way I look at it now , hunting season is year round and I won't go into the woods not prepared . If I find fresh sign I'm calling .

I know nothing, my 12 gauge or 243 never kill nuthin, west side can't be called or aint no coyotes. calling here is no different than the east side, the coyotes are just harder to see, you gotta find the spots, call em properly, use the topographic rolls of the land, keep em to yer self. LEARN TO SHOOT DO NOT MISS you aint gonna get many chances.
there are hints here, its like looking for coyotes.

Like bofire I use a 243 and 12ga but also my 9mm. And he is dead right,do not miss!! If you don't KNOW you'll hit it don't shoot. They learn fast!

Here's why I won't call in the rain again, at least not by myself , I can't hear a thing . Most of the areas I've been calling in is pretty thick , a 30 yard shot would be a long shot . Any way I rely a lot on hearing them come in , I almost always hear them before I see them and a lot of the times I hear them and never see them . Tuesday night I went out by myself in the rain , It felt like I had to move way to much to see all the area around me and I could not hear a thing . It felt like if some thing did show up it would see me before I saw it . Next time it's raining I'll find some one to go with .
