Title: 7 year old w/ Diamond Atomic
Post by: jackelope on September 24, 2014, 07:50:15 PM
Picked up a new Diamond Atomic for my 7 year old girl to shoot. She really enjoyed shooting the Bear Brave II she's had for the last little while so figured an upgrade was in order. She's shot a couple dozen arrows through it and so far so good. It shoots left consistently. I looked at the Apex sight it came with and doesn't look like it had any left to right adjustment. Do I just need to upgrade her sight?
I'll post a couple pictures of the sight so I make sure I'm not missing something.
Gimme a minute.

Also she shoots a Scott Hero release. The arrow nocks do not stay tightly on the string. I assume I should have a serving added along with a D loop.
Thoughts?
Thanks in advance.

Oh and Rad... No peep.

Well done getting her started so young!!

second picture, there is an allen screw on the down side....  loosen that and the round dowel looking part should slide in/out.  It looks like it may be already set full left though.

Have you had her adjust grip and make sure she is not torquing it?  maybe try open hand for a shot or two and see if the shots come right?

To move the arrow to the right you have to move the sight pin to the left.  So Lamrith is correct on how to adjust the sight, he just needs to look at the picture correct side up and pointed the correct direction :chuckle:  Definitely room to move the sight to correct the left impacts.  If that doesn't work we can get her that peep sight we talked about.

I think Diamond installs them all the way one direction so they fit in the shipping box without damage.

DOH! :bash:  I just need to remember my left from right!  I read left and envisioned hitting right.  yes plenty of movement to adjust it.

I also wonder if adding a peep might help her?  Make sure she is not anchoring so the string is off center of her eye and thus a inaccurate aim point?  Very hard for kids (and some of us adults) to understand the subtle mechanics of shooting a bow and shooting without a peep or kisser only makes that much harder.  I know my boys struggled with it.  draw, anchor, nose peep..

The Dloop might help a touch with any twisting while triggering the release?  I have seen Dloops done with and without serving.

Honestly I would leave the bow as simple as possible.  At 7 years old it should all be about fun.  If accuracy, within reason for a 7 year old, starts to reduce enjoyment then discuss with them about adding a peep sight or kisser button.  Kids do not suffer from "Man Ego" so it is best to keep targets Big and Close to maximize results before making things more difficult!

She usually shoots at a target about 15' away. With this bow, her arrows are hitting consistently in the same general place, just too far to the left. I'll have to take a better look at the site. I loosened that screw pointed out in the picture but I couldn't get it to move side to side. I'll try again. I forgot about a kisser button.  Probably a little more user friendly than a peep site for a little kid.
She has shot 20 yards for fun because she wanted to shoot far targets like mom and dad, but only a few times.

Thanks guys...it's fun watching her shoot.

i would say set it up as you would for you.  Def a D loop and a peep. i think it would be a big help

My two cents. That sight is the worst designed biggest piece of crap ever to be mounted on a bow. Change it out quickly and save yourself the headaches. I bought my son a Diamond Infinite Edge which is really a great little bow with lots of range but that sight has to go.

Kinda the way I'm leaning. Not sure I need to for a 7 year old, but I might anyway. Gonna try and adjust it 1st. Maybe replace it as she grows a little and becomes more fine tuned. Right now, I don't think she'd know the difference.
