Title: Brass capacity
Post by: Hilltop123 on September 28, 2014, 06:46:17 PM: Ok, lets throw out mil-spec brass.........What manufacture of brass cases, has the best case capacity? I'm curious, but not wanting to spend the money to compare.

If you find someone with the Quickload program, they can look up the default capacities the program uses and that should tell you in general what to expect for what brands have the most capacity.

Post by: b23 on September 29, 2014, 02:04:12 PM: If you could be a bit more specific with the question, I think you would get a much better answer because even though this may seem like a question that should have an exact answer, like XYZ Brass Casing Company has the largest volume of all manufacturers when comparing internal volume to another Companies case/s of the same kind. But, the answer isn't quite that simple.

If you could narrow it down to which, specific, case you want to know about, such as what brass company has the largest internal volume of all the different manufacturers of 30-06 cases, it would help considerably but even then you'd be getting an answer that was far from exact. There are just wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy to many variables.

I will say, based on the different cases that I've measured, and this is just speaking in general terms, Hornady, Federal, Winchester and Lapua all seem to be relatively close-ish. Remington tends to be SLIGHTLY bigger. But, when you are only talking about a few tenths of a grain difference, with regard to case capacity, it's almost as if the variance might as well not exist. It's so slight, it becomes insignificant in the grand scheme of reloading.

You very well could get an answer that is different or even vastly different than mine but that would actually be proving my point. Variables, lots and lots of variables.

I'm curious, why do you want to know??

I am currently using mil-spec, 7.62 brass (because I have a ton of it), while working up a new load, I have run out of case capacity. The starting load, alone fills the case into the neck, I still have 3 grains to go for max. load. And yes I am aware of the issues using military brass can cause, hence why I asked the question. So I will rephrase the question.
Of the commercial .308 brass, which manufacture generally has the most case capacity. Hope this clears things up and thanks again.

:yeah: I may be wrong but I don't see a different brand of brass having a capacity difference of 3+ grains in .308

:yeah: That does seem quite a bit. Maybe if the recipe was using fireformed-neck sized? :dunno: But could also be powder geometry. Is the powder sorted by a drop tube or anything like that.
But I think I've heard Winchester for the most-but shorter life, and Norma for less capacity and most reloads.
