Title: Rag Horn Redemption
Post by: BABackcountryBwhntr on September 29, 2014, 09:59:01 AM
After helping my wife fill her tag in WA and missing a chip shot to fill my tag on what would have been my biggest bull to date... I headed to the Oregon coast with 3 days left in hopes of getting a Bull on the ground.

Here is the write up behind my dinky, little, public land rag bull that I am very very proud to have killed. We got on a herd with a nice 5x in it at first light... they decided that Rob Stamp sounded like way to much of a bad ass and they got out of dodge. Amber Taylor then spots a herd feeding on a very very steep ridge in the cut next to us. Her and Rob go over to a skid road and proceed to start the stalk on this herd while I stay back and glass. I watch as the herd eventually feeds over the ridge.. and I wait.. and wait and wait... a few hours go by and I have no Idea where Rob and Amber are. My hope is that she killed the bull and they are in the bottom gutting him out. I decide to make my way over to the landing, and they are both there. Apparently, they got within 80 yrds of the herd feeding but could never get closer and where pinned down by some cows for almost 2 hrs. So Rob says "stay low" the bull is bedded about 150yrds down... lets go.... so we begin our slow creep down the mountainside.... thankfully the wind was in our face and we were able to make very little noise and we crept down. It was a very slow and painful hike at times as we had to pause to move around things that would make noise, we had to literally crawl on on hands, knees and stomachs a few diff times. Both Rob and I had to move sticks and debri off our "path" in order to stay quiet. We got within 25 yrds of the herd and at one point had to stay motionless for probably 15 min as a cow could see us, amazingly she just went back to feeding and we were still in the game. We spent the next 2 hrs within bow rage of the entire herd ( 11 elk) but never could quite get the shot on the bull I wanted. Eventually the herd went behind this rock out cropping in the cut with trees in it. Rob and I decided the best bet was not sneak down as close as I could and he would go back up the hill and start calling in hopes of calling them out. He starts calling and i can see a cow come out to my left ( her head) then she goes back in the thick stuff... I can hear elk moving around but can never seen the bull.... apparently, he kept walking in and out.. Rob motioned to me to get to the left and shoot... I snuck to the left and go into a better vantage point. By this time Rob was pissed that they elk were holding up, so he got aggressive and started making noise and calling closer. That worked to perfection as the entire herd came out.. I ranged a cow at 39 yrds and as the bull Followed and stopped I drew and settled my 40 pin behind the shoulder.... the shot went off and the arrow went right under him! I had dropped my arm on the follow through! I could not believe it and the herd jogged over the ridge! I Followed and was shocked to see the herd 20 yrds from me... minus the bull... he was on the next ledge down... they turned and started going to my left... I ran across 2 slash piles and got into position. The herd was going up the hill single file.... I saw the bull and came to full draw... he stopped perfectly broadside and I said 45 yrds.. in my head.... the bow went off and the arrow hammered him perfectly behind the shoulder.... Rob said you smoked him! gave me a quick hug and the bull went down in under 20 seconds.... It was a great hunt.

ya I am very lucky, not only does she do it, but she is very very good.... the next day we called in a huge 6x7 to 10 yrds for her but it was in some of the thickest reprod you can imagine and she just did not have a shot.
