I am not new to diesels and am not here for a debate on cummins is better blah blah blah. I have owned a 7.3 in the past and miss the heck out of it but traded it due to lack of space before I had my daughter (extended cab). I bought a 5.9 cummins quad cab and loved it until I had front end issues then injector issues. Towards the end of having that the injectors were having issues again and the clutch was going out and I simply did not want to nor have the money to replace them so I traded it in for a gasser. I have a 23ft travel trailer which is a lite model but still get sketched out pulling over the passes going camping with a half ton. I have my eye on a nice 04 6.0 with 79k miles on it, I know they primarily had head stud and gasket issues along with egr issues and some with electrical issues. Providing this one happens to be a lucky truck or already have those bugs worked out what should I be watching for if I follow through with taking a look at it and seeing my options with it. Any thoughts from current 6liter owners or guys that have spent time with these trucks? Thanks!

Our ambulance fleet runs 6 liters and I would not buy one to save my life. We have had nothing but problems. I know there are a few good ones out there, but I have yet to see one. Now the new engine ford has out appears to be a power house.
Good Luck...Oh, and don't buy the 6 liter. :twocents:

Haha thanks J! Yea my father has one of the new 6.7 and loves it. I may hold out for a good deal on a 7.3 crew cab but their getting harder to come by!

Buddy in Idaho had one, but got rid of it after too many problems.
-
My girlfriends dad has an 05. Lost the oil cooler and 1 turbo I think it has 120k or so on it. Other than that it's a nice truck.
-
Never even heard of a 6.0 that is actually used to pull that spent less time in the shop than on the road.
-
Not sure what your price range is, but there are quite a few 7.3 liters for sale around the 100K mark, which really is just getting broke in. My buddy runs a 7.3 with 170K and it still runs well. I guess what I am trying to say is...I wouldn't hesitate buying a 7.3 with 100K.
-
I don't want to spend more than 23k it will be financed I know some may scoff at financing but its what works for me. I have seen a few at that northwest motorsports but have read a lot of negative reviews about them but have also heard positives as well. I am not shy of buying a 7.3 with 100k I ran mine to 168k before trading it never had anything wrong, replaced batteries and alternator and ball joints. Otherwise it did everything I threw at it.

That should be enough for you to avoid them. I'd never buy a rig knowing they were prone to so many failures.

It's a no brainer, dura max diesel with the Allison tranny! Simple

My neighbor has one - its in the shop most of the time .... I would look somewhere else . :twocents:

I was in the same boat as you 1 1/2 years ago. Traded in my 7.3 extended cab with 100k on it for an 04 6.0 crew cab with 50k. The truck I bought had just had new head gaskets, egr cooler, oil cooler, and egr valve replaced. I figured it was a steal for the price and all the problems have been fixed. Wrong! 2 months later I sent it down the road after 7 trips to the shop, from everything from injectors to head gaskets again! I didn't have a chance to tow with it in the time, probably a good thing it may have blew up. I did like the stock power it had and the way it sounded, but there is a reason they are cheap. If you have about $6500 extra to spend you could buy it and bulletproof it and have a sweet truck!
-
Dang thanks buglebuster! Thats not good and definitely makes me re think looking at it. I may just hold out until I find another 7.3 or until spring. I wont be camping again until spring so I can hold off as I am not in a rush.

Unless it is a very good deal, very good, so good that even after you drop 6k into it to fix a majority of the issues, you still feel like you got a good deal, then get it. There are still 7.3l out there with low miles that can be had or step up to the new motor. I don't think its a Ford thing, that motor is just a pain in the butt and generally not worth the head aches.
Of course everyone is asking the moon for diesels these days, so expect to pay top dollar for well cared for truck. Personally, just buy a 2500 gasser and save the extra 10 grand for a new toy.

I worked for the same ambulance company. When. And I do mean when they ran they ran good. But they were always in the shop! Stay away from the 6 liter!

I own a 6.0 liter and love it. A lot of people don't realize that a diesel needs more maintenance than a gasser. Ford did have a lot of issues with that engine but there is so much material online to browse thru if you have any issues. If you know what to look for you can bite some of the issues in the butt. Keep your oil changed at 5k, change your fuel filters at 10k and coolant at 50k. I just did an oil cooler and egr in my truck. I put about $1,000 in parts into it and did my own install( I'm a diesel mechanic). Some people drive their diesels like they do a gasser. Drive it and forget it. Look up bulletproof diesel like bugle buster suggested. Talk to one of their techs. He will tell you all sorts of things about what's good and what's not. Read about everything. They also make a ton of parts for these engines. I'm happy with mine! Any questions pm me.

Our work as well has had noting but problems with the 6.0. I'd RUN!
-
I have owned an 06 F350 4X4 Dually crew cab for 5 years and love it. I owned an 99 7.3 that was the same and had to sell when I transferred to Italy; loved it as well but it was not without it's share of problems. What I can tell you about the 06 6.0 is that there are known issues with these trucks. However if you get one for the right price and drop some $$$ into taking care of some of these issues and stay up on the maintenance you should have a vehicle that meets all your needs and run for 1/2 a million miles or so. I changed out the EGR and Oil coolers with Bullet proof systems, added a Sinister Coolant Filter and AmesOil bypass oil filter system and have had no issues. I have put 70K + miles on this rig and tow a boat trailer combo that weighs 8K +. I have towed this across country and a good chunk of Canada and cruise down the highway 70-75 with no problems. Towing I get about 10-12 MPG and normal highway without towing I get 16.5MPG (this from a vehicle that weighs about 8500lbs). I also run a Bully Dog PMT set on Performance Mode. One thing I may add is keep your foot out of it so you don't slam it with turbo boost and you should not need to change head bolts to studs. Of course this is only what I have seen out of my vehicle, your results may differ. When I was looking to get mine I also posted on here and received some good gouge; part of which was to look more at the 06 model and avoid the 03/04 models as there were more issues associated with the early production models.
If at some point I do have a catastrophic failure down the road I think I will keep the truck but swap the motor for a 2002ish Cummings which should make it a bulletproof rig. Hope above helps and good luck.

I had a 2004 6.0 that has only been in the shop 3 times since it was new. First time was the TSB about the wiring chaffing issue. No Charge. Had the EGR cooler replaced under warranty. Then a couple years ago I put the Bulletproof EGR cooler in it. I've had a Edge controller on it since it was nearly brand new. My father now has it to pull his boat around and it has been flawless.
The motor is actually a pretty high tech design but unfortunately they didn't complete the package with some of the components they bolted on it.
ARP Head studs, bulletproof EGR cooler, Bulletproof external oil cooler are probably the 3 best things you can do to these 6.0L diesels.
-
Just run from it and you won't have to do all the above stuff. My bro,s 06 has been a nightmare.

wanting a 6.0 is like wanting VD ! don't do her brother !

This.
If you've got about $6k to burn and are not a diesel technician, go for it. Once you drop the 6 G's on it, it'll be bombproof though.

Yea I really don't have extra cash laying around to buy and put straight into upgrades. With all thats been said it definitely has me reeling back on looking and sticking it out with my half ton. I pulls my trailer just fine just sketchy going over the passes but got me from point A to B this camping season. Its a 5.3 which seems to be pretty bullet proof its self I'm more concerned about tranny issues later on. But thats the nature of towing. I am considering a intake and after market exhaust to get a little better flow not sure about a programmer I don't know how much they really help, any ideas? Thanks guys

Letting it breath will help a lot. As far as a tuner on a gas vehicle u will see some difference but not as dramatic of a change as a diesel.

Put a CUMMINS in it...
-
Why not just buy a dodge if you're going to spend thousands putting a cummins engine into a ford truck?
-
I've owned my '06 6.0 auto since new, 112k on it now. Love the truck. I often pull real loads with mine, but I maintain religiously and know what to look for in terms of potential issues.
That said, I would NEVER buy a used 6.0 that had a lift and bigger tires, had ever had an aftermarket tune on it, or without having all maintenance records available for review (including OASIS report) and having a ScanGuage hooked up to it during a test drive that allows for an accurate assessment of what you're looking at. Even then, as others have said, it would be wise to be proactive in addressing some of the known issues. Ford makes a beast of a truck and I happen to think these years are some of the best looking trucks ever made, but this excellent International engine suffers from some hokey engineering of the bolt-on stuff. All upgradeable if it hasn't gone past the tipping point (which is a failed EGR cooler, allowing coolant into the intake, which will stretch the stock head bolts, blowing your head gaskets).
In short, educate yourself and proceed with caution. You could do worse, like the 6.4 Powerstroke...

I was looking for a descent low mileage 7.3 liter. I could not find anything fair priced with low mileage. I gave up. Just bought the new 2014 6.4 liter RAM 3500 gas model. I get 15.3 miles to the gallon. Love it!
My only negative about it. It Boggs down in the lower gears until you get the RPMs up. The electronic tranny takes a minute to shift up to the next gear. Other than that; no complaints. Go to Dave Smith and finance a new truck!

I have been curious about this new motor. My brother and law works for a body shop and had to fix one and said it seemed to run well and the guy said he was getting 16ish mpg. I may wait till the beginning of the yr or spring to make a decision, I have a new baby due anytime now and trying to get my hunt in as well.

The factory intake and exhaust flow more air than the 5.3 can use. Save the money for gas and beer.
If your truck is "sketchy" towing a 23' trailer, its not set up to tow correctly. Get a quality weight distribution hitch and sway control. Keep the tires inflated correctly.
Don't be afraid to run it at 4K+ rpm if necessary. That's where small blocks make power. If GM thought it wasn't good for the engine, they wouldn't have designed it to turn those rpm.

There are quite a few guys on RV.net with the new 6.4
The gear spacing from 1st to 2nd is a common complaint.

DO NOT GET A 6.0!!! i know some times you may be lucky and get an ok one, but its not a if it goes out scenero with those trucks its just a matter of when. i bought mine with 98k on it for $22k and sold it at 106k for $13k after i had to put $12k into it just to get out from under it and get rid of the damn thing and i talked to the guy that bought it 2 days ago and its back in the shop with the engine torn apart again, i had to replace headstuds, gaskets, egr delete, ficm, turbo 2x, HPOP (high pressure oil pump), oil cooler, radiator, degas bottle, and injectors and the injectors went out again currently why its in the shop now. i used quality parts from sinister performance and ARP. i never hot rodded the truck or got on it, never towed heavy weight. come to think of it I only towed a car trailor once with a samurai on it about 10 mi.
my take on it is steer far, far, FAR from a 6.0 powerstroke, i did love the truck but i hated the hell out of it and its not worth the money or trouble

I have proper distribution and sway control, and ensure I don't have all the tongue weight sitting on the rear making it sag. I more so mean the motor tranny combo. I come from running diesels while towing so pulling with a gasser is what is sketchy to me with the rpms being so high. That doesn't seem normal to me but everyone says it is.

I was told the gear spacing was designed towards towing a large load. The truck is low end power. This is why it Boggs down with an empty load. I don't know....
Regardless; I really like my truck. Saved about $8500 buying from Dave Smith. Worth the drive over there.

Did you flush the heck out of the coolant system before putting in the new oil cooler. Then install a coolant filtration system after?

I cant believe 6.0s still sell for the money they do.

Now that I think about it more if you don't have any diesel experience I would steer clear. Just the simple fact that labor costs will kill you. I can do the work myself at a fraction of the cost because of my experience. Don't put a programmer on it. The head bolts are torque to yield and will stretch with too much cylinder pressure causing a blown head gasket. The early egr would fail and flash boil the coolant causing all sorts of issues. The oil coolers would plug because of contamination in the system and the kind of coolant that ford was running. There were also injector issues. If the oil wasn't changed at proper intervals the Heui system( hydraulically activated electronically controlled) would shear the oil. This would cause "stiction" inside the injector. Do not do an egr delete. For one they are not legal and two on a 6.0 liter the egr valve is used as a wastegate for the turbo. All a wastegates job is to dump excess boost into the exhaust. No wastegate = excessive cylinder pressure. I've updated my truck with bulletproof items and such and I love it. But I also can do all the work. I've had extensive experience on diesels ranging from the 6.0 all the way up to the cat c15 and isx cummins. No engine is perfect. When egr systems came out it was a nightmare. Cummins engines have injector issues, lift pump issues, throttle position sensor issues and on and on. I'm more than happy to answer any questions.

That's a good question? There are a quite a few Ford trucks out there that are converted. Maybe people really like Ford Truck and not the motors? :dunno: Maybe they like the tight turning radius of a Ford Truck? :dunno: :chuckle:

The turning radius sucks on the leaf sprung Fords but the 05 and up coil suspended trucks turn much better. One more selling point on the Ford, A REAL BACKSEAT. 3rd gen dodge crew cabs have no room in the back comparatively speaking. I know 2010 Cummins and up have ample room as well as 3rd gen Mega's but they can cost almost twice what a well equipped 6.0 does.

I agree with slimdog. These trucks are really great trucks, but you cannot afford to be an ignorant or passive owner with the 6.0 diesel. You have to constantly be on the lookout for signs of the known issues cropping up. Any one of the symptoms by itself is not a really big deal - mostly just a day's worth of work and a couple hundred in parts to fix - but allow it to progress into the cascade of failures that are often described by disgruntled 6.0 owners and you will quickly find yourself in the "cab off" club.
$$$$$$ (You do NOT want to join that club) $$$$$$$

im in the cab off club  not that awesome

I'm inclined to disagree with the egr valve being the wastegate. That's part of the vgt's job.
-
egr isn't a waste gate it is designed to cool combustion temps by diluting the fuel mixture with spent exhaust gas. gets rid of NOX and decreases detonation. although on a diesel if the egr was stuck open it would lower boost because of exhaust gas by pass.

You're right coach. I guess technically it's the Vgt sole kids job. I was thinking wastegate on the egr valve because I've had them stick and had low power/low boost. Thanks for the correction!

I've been in the same boat as you for a couple of years. My 7.3 was awesome and went to a gasser 6 years back. I've had the itch for a diesel again and in my price range, the 6 was it.
Edit** My buddy talked me out of my 150 and I'll be picking up an 04 6.0 in a few days. Getting it at a pretty good price and it's already been bullet proofed so I guess time will tell.
