I'm new to the site but have fallowed it for a couple years now. My question is me and a couple friends are heading over east for a few days of hunting and my worry is if someone gets one opening day and we stay to hunt a couple more days. I just don't want the meat to spoil. We plan to hike in 4 miles or so. What do most people do to preserve the meat on multi day hunts?

After I get a buck back to camp and skin it out I debone the meat and put it on ice in a cooler. I also don't pack in to hunt, so this will probably not work for you as you won't have a cooler handy.in your situation I would debone the meat (with a 4 mile pack out you are going to want to do this anyway) and get it cool somehow and keep the insects off of it. Wush i could help more but i dont hunt like that. Good luck.

skin it, hang it in a tree, and put a game bag on it

I'm guessing it's going to continue to be pretty hot over there. If you get an elk on the ground or a deer, you'll want to get it cold fast or you'll hate the meat and waste it. You might think about changing your plans about hiking in until it gets cooler.

4 miles isn't that far. Do what everyone else said. Skin it, debone it pack it out and get it on ice. Otherwise, this time of year you're risk of spoilage is high.

I second rickomatic...
The lucky one gets to spend day two packing it out: he/she can't shoot a second one anyways.

Since 4 miles is not very far, if I was to shoot a deer first day in your siutation, this is what I would do:
-Bone out all the meat
-Pack meat, head and cape to truck
-Drive into town, fill cooler with ice, buy whiskey, put game bags in heavy duty contractor trash bags, and put meat on ice.
-Hike back to camp with whiskey and hang out with your friends.

:yeah: Except substitute the whiskey for vodka pops
