Title: One day down on the farm
Post by: Band on October 12, 2014, 03:59:52 PM
I've been getting the invite to hunt my wife's family wheat farm on the east side for a few years and started taking advantage of that offer last year.  We saw plenty of deer that year, including lots of bucks, but most of them were 2-pointers.  By the time I could put a third point on a couple of them it ws too late for a good shot so I missed my opportunity.

This year was a little better.  Plenty of deer again, many of them in large herds, and no shortage of bucks with several 3 and 4-pointers.  I missed my opportunity at a nice 3-point around 7:30 am on opening day but redeemed myself about 1/2 hour later when a herd of several does and 2 bucks headed my way after shots rang out from the next property.  I could see them coming from a mile away so I had plenty of time to anticipate their approximate travel path and get set up for the shot.  They slowed down considerably when they came in my neighborhood and the bigger buck presented a broadside shot at about 200 yards.  The hit sent him running downhill toward me from the other side of the canyon and he hit the dirt at the bottom.  Here is the ATL picture.

He's not huge but as it turns out it's my biggest Washington buck.

And by the way, no, I'm not a Packers fan.  We just happen to have a lot of family in Green Bay and they love to send hats and T-shirts for gifts.  It's my new lucky hunting hat.

I worked hard for that pic.  As usual, I was by myself and had to use my tiny tripod and a timer for the pic.  Every time I went to set up the camera the side of the buck's head picked up a lot of wheat stubble and dirt from the ground and I had to rush to brush it off before the camera went off.  As it turns out, the only picture where I did an adequate cleaning job had me looking at...the back of my vehicle, I guess.  Dangit. :chuckle:

Hey, you know that's a mule deer, right? ;)

Is your wife's family adopting?  :chuckle:
As a matter of fact, yes they are.  They are "adopting" a resolution to invite only family members. :chuckle:

Good thing it would be discriminatory for the govt to say we cannot get married...even if we already have wives. Lol
