Title: ruger american or guide gun

Anyone using either of these rifles? I'm looking to get a new rifle with weather shield to handle the elements.

I have an american in 30-06. Haven't had trouble with rust but I'm also vigilant about upkeep. They do offer a stainless now. I like the gun and packing it in the mountains is great compared to my old 12 pound rifle.

My girlfriend has an American and it has developed a little bit if surface rust on the bolt. I just keep wiping it off. The gun is a great shooter though.

I dont have either but there are some amazing accuracy reports coming back from a lot of people who have the American (amazing for the price point). The American and the Guide are two different actions, with the American you'll have a detachable magazine (an issue for some).

The Guide Gun has an ugly stock in my opinion, I think it would look much nicer being one color instead of looking like a water colored rainbow. However I still want one as a large bore carbine, I'd use mine for a timber rifle (as if I need another). The stock spacers on my GSR (same as on the Guide) work well and the rubber pad is quite soft. The laminate stock of my GSR (again, similar to the Guide) has been in rain and snow as well as hot and cold and it hasn't been affected in any way that I can tell. It's been abused and still it hasn't warped.

I have the 375 Ruger Guide Gun. Very accurate and nice handling rifle. Well balanced. The pictures don't do the colored rifle stock justice. I thought it would look ugly but once I got the rifle in hand it is beautiful. Had rifle in rain all day deer hunting and no signs of rust. I installed Alaskan Arms quick detach rings with a Leupold VX3 2.5-8x36mm duplex. Open sights are visible and rifle comes up nice. I went with quick detach scope rings because hunting in bush and heavy timber I could have scope off and re-install it once on top in clear cuts. With Alaskan Arms quick detach rings scope returns to same POA. I chronographed the Hornady factory 270gr. ammo and getting an average of 2777fps. with the 20" barrel. I plugged that into a ballistic calculator and this rifle is producing 4623  ft. Ibs. of muzzle energy. I have a friend with the same set-up and he used the combo on a cow elk last week on a damage control hunt. Shot was 260yds. in a wheat field. He said the report was huge whoop and big cow elk down. Complete pass through with little meat damage.

Just remember:  Stainless Steel is NOT rustproof--it's rust RESISTANT.  It still needs to be taken care of!....
