Title: HOW MANY DECOYS IN YOUR SPREAD?
Post by: irishevox on October 17, 2014, 07:44:19 AM
I know  this topic comes up quite a bit, but i always get excited and use a ton when the season comes... So this is what i do.... i use in some areas 4 dozen (mixed bag) Mallard, teal, widegon, and Pintails and then i add about 5-8 Goose floaters( Goose Floaters aren;t included in the 4 dozen)  I spread them pretty good and leaving a landing lane for the others to come in to...Some areas i use only a dozen with no goose floaters.  When i hunt this private farm i have access to i just use 19 goose shells ( in the process of getting more) what are ya'lls toughts  what does ya'll spreads look like? Pics are good to, next time i go out i will snap some...

Depends on where I'm hunting, how late in the season, layout of the body of water I'm on, wind velocity, local birds or new birds from the north and how hot my coffee is that morning.  Over the years I've read some stuff that added to my knowledge as to how many to put out, but most of it has come from trail and error.
It's never more than a good guess, ya just gotta be willing to change your pitch when they ain't swingin.  Whether huntin or fishin, being stubborn has probably cost me more opportunity than most other causes combined.
Sometimes, less is better.

:yeah: My amount of dekes, layout, positioning changes all the time. Trial and error happens a lot too where we start with a certain set up and then after seeing how the birds are working, we go change it up a bit to try and adapt.

When scouting I try to get an idea of how many birds are using the area I want to hunt and match what is natural. We've put out 14 dozen or so on the big water when the birds are rafted up. Hunting Honkers, a guy can get away with 2 or 3 properly placed in a field, lessors you better bring the trailer.

Up to:
120 puddle ducks
120 divers
60 sea ducks
120 full body geese

I don't always use everything. But that's what I can run if I need to.
