Title: Wet Modern Firearm elk season
Post by: kbrowne14 on October 22, 2014, 09:09:05 AM
It looks like this season is going to be straight rain all week on the eastside.  I'm used to a little bit of rain over there, but not this wet.  I have some packable rain gear, and waterproof boots.  I am not super worried about getting wet, but do you guys have any tips for staying dryer or any tips on hunting in the rain?  Do elk behave differently in the rain?  Its pretty much been dry for majority of my elk seasons.

It's a little easier to move around quietly in my opinion... the rain masks your footsteps. Walked within 10 yards of a 4X4 blacktail without him knowing I was there. The creak my cam made when I drew back gave him a heads up though....

Keep your feet as dry as can be and sit in front of a tree... a little comfort but still a little wet!

Find a good vantage spot where there is fresh track. Find a large pine that is dry under it set down and make a small warming fire between your feet.

Just don't fall asleep.

I don't mind hunting in the wind but rain just T's me off! However, if you don't go, you don't get. We'll be on the west side, as usual.   :bash:  It's going to be very moist this year.

Mom shot a nice bull in the pouring rain on a any bull tag on monday.  Rain doesn't hurt hunting.  Pull up your big boy pants and get r done.

Thank you. I had to take notice that the protection is rather on the very smallish side. :chuckle:

It is what it is! It will be a great week regardless and I won't be at work!

As someone who hunts elk on the Wet side. My only advice is to EMBRACE it! :chuckle:

It's not the length of the muzzle or the caliber which are important, just the velocity. And yes, people with smaller firearms always say that.  :yike:
