Title: Twitching jigs for salmon
Post by: duckmen1 on October 22, 2014, 02:03:49 PM: Hearing a lot lately about twitching jigs for salmon. Never done it but it sounds like it can be good and a fun different way of fishing. What's your success been. Pics would be cool

Fish them like a PW darts in slow deep holes, and fast popping retrieve in fast slots...

It can catch Silvers when nothing else will. Or put em in the boat 10fold over other methods.

Post by: BigGoonTuna on October 22, 2014, 03:09:37 PM: it's another good trick to know. another upside is that if you buy jigs in bulk, it's a much more cost effective way to catch silvers than spinners. if you aren't losing gear, you aren't fishing.

people overthink it though. just pretend you're fishing for smallmouth with a jig.

Purple's, pinks and blues seem to kill!

Prolly gonna focus the rest of the season on chums though. But like said I think black and purple maybe chartreuse will be good producers when I get a little bit of practice in the art of jigging.

Post by: wafisherman on October 24, 2014, 07:45:27 AM: I was twitching jigs before it was called twitching jigs... Very deadly if you adapt to the situation correctly. I've caught steelhead, humpies, chum, silvers, kings, cutthroat, rainbows, and dollies on jigs.

Each salmon prefers a slightly different retrieve. Also, the water speed, depth, and clarity factor in.

Sometimes tipped with prawn works.

My favorite method is taking a bare quality jig head, then threading on 3\4 of a pink worm tail.

Just don't use this as an excuse to snag. If you are fishing schools of salmon, learn to tell the difference between a bite and a bump from hitting the side or belly... Fish above them and not over and through them. A slow purposeful twitch will often out fish the ripping retrieve, and you wont have to waste time dealing with anal snagged salmon..

I do t go any heavier than 1/2 oz. this is one of my go 2's. 3/8oz on a 5/0 Gami.
