I finally found a hot doe Saturday morning with a couple bucks on her tail. I was doing my best trying not to pull the trigger on a little forked horn when I caught a glimpse of this guy poking his head out amidst a patch of hemlock seedlings at about 100 yds. After I pulled the trigger, he disappeared and I could see a couple deer bouncing away over a little rise in the clear cut. When I got up to where he was standing when I shot, I couldn't find him. After looking around for a sec, I heard the sound of deer bouncing away in the distance. I looked up and saw two does, a forked horn, and a nice mature buck just reaching the tree line. I thought to myself, "dang I missed". I tried to make a bleat sound to get them to stop and when I did I saw a deer leg start kicking up from the slash about 50 ft away. I spine shot him and dropped him in his tracks. Kinda bummed that I let the big one get away and probably cut this guy down two years before his prime. He was definitely a healthy deer. No such thing as a bad blacktail.

Thanks, no hair loss on this guy...beautiful coat. I think his hair is just a little matted down in a few spots in the pic. Haven't actually seen a case of it in the areas I hunt, but the deer densities aren't really that high.

Congrats on your buck. But word of advice, After you make a shot you should thoroughly look for blood before thinking you missed because the deer didnt drop where you think it was when you shot. I have had deer not bleed for up to 20 yards after a shot and my bear this year not bleed a drop for 30-40 yards on a dubble lung. From the sounds of it, if that other buck would have stopped you would have shot that one also and if you didnt see the one you did shoot kick you had already decided you missed. I hope im entirely wrong. Thats just what it sounded like to me. I am glad you got your deer though. That is a fat little sucker.

Thanks. You're both entirely right...and entirely wrong. If you're familiar with my posts, you'll understand why... :chuckle:
