Title: Colockum spike.
Post by: Biggerhammer on October 28, 2014, 12:27:22 AM
This is my younger brothers Colockum spike which is his first Elk. He's shot his share of deer but this being his first Elk he's pretty excited about it. Got into a heard of a hundred head or so. This was the only spike in the group. Several rag horns, three big Bulls and one MONSTER bull. This bull was shot steep down hill at 396 yards with a 16" AR carbine in 6.5 Grendel and a Precision Firearms factory load with the 120gr Nosler Ballistic Tip. Got the head, gear and hind quarters to the truck at 11:30pm(2 Mile pack out) steep and deep. Going back for the rest.

This bull had a arrow shaft lodged through both nasal cavities. Over the jaw and bellow and in front of the eyes. From side to side, broke off almost flush on the right side and protruding from the left. Pretty much healed up and was witnessed grazing before he was introduced to the 120gr Ballistic Tip.

Here are some better photo's, upon closer inspection. This elk had some serious issues with his nose and other injuries.

poor animal!! Your bro did the right thing in taking him.

I hope that person who shot him with an arrow sees this and practices more.  that is one hell of a bad miss.
Crap happens , my guess is the guy wasn't aiming for his head ... I've seen plenty of elk with a leg blown off over the years .  but yes it must have been a rough month for the animal. although I've seen some bulls with crazy wounds from horns that heal up .
