Anyone been out after squid yet? Any reports?
-
Seems early yet. I'll check with a friend who keeps better track.
He messaged back that he has heard some talk, but not much.
-
I have done it from pier's before in Tacoma. Any suggestions on how to Squid from a boat in the South Sound??

I have been squid jigging since I was 10 years old and still go as much as I can every season. Don't know why but I truly enjoy it. The reports so far this year have been good in Des Moines and just recently started picking up in the Seattle areas. It's a good idea to get a generator, and about 15 to 20 jigs to start out. The smaller the jigs, the better imo. Also use a light action rod, most avid squid fishermen use a 5 or 6 wt fly rod with a spinning reel for extra sensitivity. Any other questions, feel free

I’ve been out a couple times this year at Pier 86 and got skunked both times. Some other guys out there were doing OK, but it’s been on the slow side. Everyone else was using really small jigs and mine were pretty big. I think that’s been the X factor. These are factory made ones I got from Sportco. I should have learned my lesson before, I’ve never caught squid one on factory made jigs. This weekend I’ll go to this little fishing shop in the International District that sells the homemade ones, then I’ll be back in the game.
-
The handmade jigs with bent pins for hooks definitely work better than the ones with the one or two rows of short, thick points. It's pretty easy to make your own with some pins, wire, beads, and solder. I saw a guy with one that blinked red down at Steilacum many years ago. He limited in the middle of everyone slowly picking away, sold his jig (unfortunately not to me), and went home for the night.
We used to use the factory ones down south, but those squid were 2 to 5 times bigger than our local itsy bitsies.

Believe me, it's a hole in the wall, but the jigs I bought from him a couple years back do the trick. Call first though, for all I know, it's not even there anymore.
-
I took a drive out the Stillicom last night, a few folks there and a few squid were being caught. It's still about 4or 5 weeks early for down here.
I bought anew generator and a couple of lights today.
I'll be at the beach clam digging next weekend but I'll probably try squiding the weekend after.
-
I went squiding both Fri. night and Sat. night at the Stillicom pier. Both nights I was only there for around 3 hours. I got 22 Fri. night and 20 last night. It's still a few weeks early but a few are being caught.

I haven't done that in so long!! If I remember right we did it at Edmonds pier..(spelling)

Nice job JamieB!
-
nice. I have never tried jigging for them
-
Nice catch. I’ve been out 3 times this year and not a single squid! It’s usually pretty rare to get less than 5 at all, let alone skunked. I have no idea what I’m doing wrong. How could I catch them all summer on buzz bombs but I can get them with jigs and a light?
-
:) what do you do to eat them??
Carl
-
We like them breaded and deep fried.

Typically I choose to go to Seattle over Edmonds bc the fishing is more consistent. Whenever I try Edmonds, I always go the night that damn seal shows up. If you would like to go let me know. It's a great time. Just plan on being on late... most nights I don't pack up until 2 am

Thanks for the offer. I’ve been doing this for years, I think it’s just bad luck. But I am heading out to Pier 86 tonight to try again. It had been so warm before, I wonder if that had anything to do with it…

Sometimes it's the smallest details that are the differences between catching 5 squid or 5 lbs. Sometimes, they just won't ever turn on or come in. Just like real fishing lol. Let me know how it goes for you out there. I have really kicked ass when it's been cold and clear. If the water is dirty, I don't typically do as well. Normally caused by high river water, lots of rain, ect... Hope to help any way I can

Night and day difference. I caught about 20 last night. I think the clear and cold made a huge difference. But one of the regulars down there gave me some pointers that really helped, too. I had always caught them right off the bottom, but for whatever reason, everyone is catching them about 10 feet down this year, right below the huge school of whatever those tiny fish are. Cast the jigs right past the far edge of the light, slowly bring the rod tip to the sky and then set the bale. Also, I was letting the jigs drop way too fast. I needed to keep the line taught and lower it over about 10 seconds. Everyone who was doing well was using red or orange jigs. I was fishing with one blue and one orange jig (otherwise identical) and every single one I got was off the orange one. I tried to tie on another orange one, but my hands were so cold I couldn’t tie the knot.
The guy said you can always get lucky and snag one as it swims by, and when they come up having been speared through the body, that’s probably what happened. But when you’re doing it right, they’re hanging upside down from the hooks.
I still wasn’t doing as well as the masters down there, but my game is much improved. Or maybe it was just a good night, we’ll see.

If you’re from Tacoma, the Les Davis pier on Ruston is where I got started, and made all my best catches. If you let the jig sit on the bottom for a minute, sometimes you can get baby octopus. I’ve never been able to do that from any other pier.
-
Do you eat baby octopus?
I caught and released one last Saturday night.

You threw out the catch of the day! Octopus is my favorite.
If it’s a true baby, the size of your palm, you can cook them the same way as squid, just a little lower heat. They are super hardy and will stay alive for hours out of the water, and can easily escape a bucket. The best way I’ve found to kill them without mangling them is to drop them in fresh water. It kills them extremely fast, but the way their skin starts rapidly changing colors as they die is a little grisly.
Larger juveniles are pretty easy too. Stab the nerve cluster between their eyes and it’s lights-out. Then pull the head inside out and pull all the entrails out. Beat the bodies against the concrete for a few minutes and you’ve already done most of the prep work. I like the juveniles grilled.

When I was young we had a cabin on Hood Canal, our neighbor was old Portuguese fisherman who fished for octopus.
He had small coffee cans spaced about 10 feet apart on a 100 foot line, weighted, with a lighter line attached to a buoy.
He would set them before sunset then retrieve them just before first light. Usually each can would have an octopus in it.
He would pull them out of the can and bit them between the eyes without braking the skin. It kills them instantly.
It was freaky how big of an octopus could fit in a small coffee can!
He would give us the small one to play with in the tidal pools. They are incredibly smart critters.
If you have never had Taku Poke (Hawaiian for teriyaki/soy sauce octopus) really easy to make and it is to die for!

You bet! Sounds like there are a few around and I'm always game to go. Let me know if you wanna get out one of these nights

I'm sure it's not the best idea, but they don't live very long and you don't catch them very often, so hopefully that reduces risk somewhat.
But no, I wouldn't recommend making that part of your regular diet. But then again, people eat crazy amounts of crab that's caught within Seattle city limits, so... who knows.

You might not be able to keep an octopus that you have hooked, I think it is hand catch only (I could be wrong), it might be only illegal to spear them. Be sure to check your regs.

How up to Bellingham?
A neighbor pulled up an old abandonded crab trap this summer that was covered with squid egg cases, so they are here. I have never heard of anyone fishing them though. They may not concentrate here like they do farther south. There are also no big lighted docks to fish from that I know of.
-
What about anchoring somewhere with the boat with lights? Does anyone do that?

The best jigs are not from WalMart but from the folks, usually Asian it seems, that make them. For these squid, store bought jigs have too thick of points from my experience. You want the ones with points that look like a sewing pin with an 'L' shape. I think someone posted where they can be bought but don't remember the thread. They are not super hard to make, some pins, wire, beads, lead, and solder.
-
You can buy good ones at outdoor emporium, teds sport center, and auburn sports and marine.
-
My buddy and I limited last night

Pretty good haul from Pier 86 last night. About 2 hours.

Haven't gone in years, enjoy it though

I got a few pounds last night at Stillicom in 4 hours.
Lots of small ones.

Generally they are smaller the farther south you go.
-
Cooked up some of mine last night.

I haven't been squid jigging in years and never did very well when I went. Do the squid jigs with lights in them (green or a different color) work any better than regular jigs?
-
You guys heard some squid fisherman drug up a decomposed body last week, right?
-
You guys with the cooked squid pics....YUM! Looks awesome!

I find these small PSound squid hard to clean without opening them up, but then I love deepfried shrimp more than any other way.

I saw a guy with a red flashing one fill a bucket while the rest of us just got one here and there. He then sold the jig to someone and went home. The problem I have seen with the storebought blinking ones is that the pins are too short and fat to catch the squid as well as the homemade ones that the Asians sell. :twocents:
-
Is anyone stuffing them ?
Not anymore, on the advice of my Proctologist. :llam:
-
Dang that deep fried squid looks tasty!
-
Never done it. Wouldnt even know where to start. Anyone going in desmoines want to teach a newbie?
-
Is anyone stuffing them ?
I’ve stuffed them with pork sausage and baked them. They turned out well, but just remember that sausage expands as it cooks, so don’t stuff the whole body. Otherwise it starts to come out of the bottom and the whole thing looks a bit unseemly. :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
been along time but i had a friend from Boston over and he cooked some seasoned burger and mixed it with his own mushroom sauce, stuffed the squid, folded the end and used a toothpick to keep it closed. Then he coated it with his own concoction and deep fried it. Extremely good. secret family recipes he said so i couldn't get it out of him.

I hope to try my first year trying for squid. Me and the family are headed out Monday, I'll let you know how I do. Thanks for all the tips.

So I'm new... Is it better to go late or during the day?

So I'm new... Is it better to go late or during the day?
After dark, the best time is about 2 hours before high tide.
-
Thanks. Tacoma docks?
-
I always like the Les Davis Pier on Ruston way.
-
The Stillicom pier was slow last night. I got a couple of pounds in 6 hours.
Most folks were leaving with less the that.
-
I was out at Tacoma Friday night for 2-3 hours and left with 1. Lots of guys had nothing. I've heard that day time has been better than night this year, any truth to it?
-
I've never tried it during daylight.
-
Well I am trying tomorrow...I'll let you know how it goes.
-
I love squid and octopus! Up in Prince William Sound in Alaska we used to catch the bigger ones, 15-20 inches and bigger, real meaty. I clean them, then par boil them. Just long enough that the skin is very easy to rub off. Then I cut the body into inch sized cubes and marinade them.
Olive oil, garlic, chopped onions and celery, tomatoes, Italian seasoning, then a mixture of apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and lemon juice. Then I chop up some oranges and limes and toss them in. Let it soak over night and yummmmm! Do the same with octopus.
I never measure anything, just throw in what ever amount it looks like it needs and finish it off by taste.
-
Revwrangler
Please post how you do during the day.
-
I drove to Edmonds sat night. Big schools swimming through the lights but they were snagging them. They wouldn't bite.
-
Went today and nothing too incredible. Caught a few in about an hour and a half.
-
I wonder if it has anything to do with spawning? Last time, they were in a frenzy like I'd never seen, and a lot of them were full of eggs.
I hope it's at least mediocre tomorrow night. I was hoping to get at least a pound for my New Year's Eve Cioppino.
-
Good luck. I haven't had anywhere near that good of a night. And none of the ones I have caught had eggs in them.
-

was that day or night? DId you try the day trip yet?
-
That was day. From about 12:00-3:00. Gonna try tomorrow morning at 7:30 when they open the gates.
-
kewl, let us know
-
Alright so here is my short report. I only had an hour to be able to go today before work, I got there at 7:30 and caught one. In that time only one other guy caught one. So I guess it was once again dead. Not sure what the trick is...I sure haven't found it. I think I may try Steilicoom next time. Any suggestions?
-
I'm going to try tonight. Hopefully this cold snap we've had today will wake em up.
-
Let me know how you do. Are you fishing Point Defiance?
-
Pier 86, Seattle
-
Anyone doing any good? I haven't been out since Monday. But really haven't nailed a lot of them.
-
I haven't been out since last Thursday night. We didn't do that good. But for the two weeks before that we were doing really good. So I hope last Thursday night was just an off night and not that the season is winding down. We are planning on hitting it again this Thursday night and depending on how that goes, going again early Friday morning.
-
Let me know how you do
-
I went out this past Thursday night on the Seattle water front where we had been doing pretty good over the past few weeks. But with the rivers all running high and dirty, the Duwamish was dumping a lot of muddy water into the bay and every pier we hit was really muddy water. We did try a couple spots for a little bit and only caught a few. Not many people out there either, they must have known it wasn't worth going with the muddy water. I will be back out there again this coming Thursday night.
-
Good luck.
I'm going to try Stillicom one last time Friday night.
-
I went out last night for a while. It was miserable. Even the ninjas weren’t catching anything. The water looked like hot chocolate. I would be surprised if there was a foot of visibility. Poor little squids must be starving.
-
How long do you think it would take for the water to clear up ? I have never been squid fishing, live on Whidbey island and this year is my last shot before i transfer. Is the Edmonds Pier any good? any other suggestions for places to go
-
We went out last night down on the Seattle water front...water is nice and clear this week. We didn't catch that many and they were all small. We hit 3 different spots and all about the same. Not many and all small. I am starting to wondering if the season is winding down.
-
I hit Stillicom Friday night. Tide was out so the water was shallow, in the couple of hours I was there I didn't see many caught. I caught 10 in the first 1/2 hour and then nothing for over a hour so I packed it in.

You might be right. I haven’t read anything in the last few weeks to be optimistic about. My only thought is that the warmer weather we’ve been having isn’t forcing the big ones as close to shore as earlier.
-
We are going to give it one more try tomorrow night and if its as bad as its been probably hang it up for the year. And they start looking forward to hopfully them opening up smelt dipping in the Cowlitz again this year.
-
hmmm, nuttin' at Edmonds?
-
hmmm, nuttin' at Edmonds?
I went out the last few nights at Edmond's Pier and picked up a half dozen each trip. Slow :bash:
If your going watch the tide maybe that will help. I've been hitting an out going tide. There are only a few people there during the week days. Their there but it is slow. Plan on a couple of hours.
Oh and my daughter caught a small octopus on her last cast. She through it back right after it bit her. :yike: Don't grab um :bdid:
JC :hello:

Anyone ever try down around Shelton?

Cash n carry. Boxes of squid are like 3 bucks.
