A buddy of mine was lucky enough to draw a cow tag in Unit 336, Taneum. I got a call from him last night and and he needs some help. He's been up there since Tuesday and has only managed to see 6 doe deer total, Zero Elk. I'm planning on going up to help him try and locate a herd so he can get a shot off at a cow to hopefully fill the freezer but can't make it out until Saturday morning.
He's scouted the area 3-4 times before the season but with Taneum not being our typical hunting location we weren't prepared for all the hunters that showed up in the area we had scouted. Over the past few days he's spent time around Quartz mountain and Ice-cycle creek areas but like I said hasn't found the elk. I wouldn't be asking this if we were trying to fill a bull or spike tag but since it's a simple cow tag I figured I'd put some feelers out there to y'all and see if somebody might be willing to point us in the right direction. Maybe you just left the area or spend a lot of time in the unit and could recommend a spot you'd expect us to be successful. My buddy has been hunting for 5 years and never managed to fill a tag, I'd love to at least try and put him in a position to get a shot off, this is more of a meat hunt than anything else. Feel free to PM me if you don't want to broadcast your suggestions Thank you!

A buddy of mine also drew a muzzy cow tag in there and we spent 5 days looking for one and finally had to just give up and go get a spike elsewhere...very disappointing hunting area and out of all the hunters we talked to only 2 of them had seen elk. Maybe its a weather thing or possibly the time of year but we were not impressed !!
Good luck to your bud he is gonna need it in there !! :sry:

we had muzzy cow tags in there and got into elk everyday .

When u get to quartz mnt walk west about 2 miles ...peaches to cliffy...they are there

How can you be hunting around quartz mt when its not in the 336 unit? Tell him to go get a map first.

I had a Taneum cow tag last year, I couldnt believe we only saw 1 cow and she was in Easton and moving fast soon as we got out of the truck.
I hunted the entire unit came up empty.
And no I did not stay in the truck.

He didn't say hunt at Quartz Mountain. What he posted IS the Taneum unit. Sounds like you need a map! :chuckle:

No he did not say he was "hunting" Quartz but from his post he did say he could not find elk and had been up around Quartz...not sure why some one looking to fill there cow permit for 336 would be spending time in a unit not for there tag... :dunno:

Oh, I didn't even read the original post, I thought he was referring to fishgamereaper's post. Still, Quartz Mountain is the end of the road, and if I was going to hunt that part of the Taneum unit I'd go in that way.

For those people that need a map, here's a screenshot from GoHunt:

Yep...and quartz is a few miles from 336....but hey it all looks the same when driving around :chuckle:
-
Quartz is pretty far from any road in the tanuem.
-
Who needs a road? It's not a long walk. I've done it.

We know.

Thus the reason I told him to walk 2 miles west from Quartz... :chuckle:

So how did your weekend hunt go?
-
If a guy was willing to hike into 336 from there he would kill a cow :bash: but he must like to pack meat a ways

Thank you to those that were willing to help out and offer suggestions. Unfortunately my buddy didn't fill his tag. We saw 3 elk in 4 days and all were 6x6 bulls, deep in the canyons in the thick timber. Wish I had an any bull tag. As I got to within 20 yds of one of them.
