the anatomy of a cage trap...........
I know Kip has been working on some different styles, I think he produced a folding version of my 8x16x24
Lets see what you are using
-
Look in the back of your truck and you will see the style I use! :chuckle: Modifying a bit this year however.

Hannibal,
How did you keep the raccoon from pulling the plastic into the cage? Anytime I've used a soft trap cover, it ends up shredded inside the cage. Plastic, old blanket, tarp material....what a mess! And we aren't going to talk about the garden hose that was left within reach of the cage...

I need to get into trapping some day.
You all seem like your tinkering all the time and it looks like fun

Oh it's fun, but it's also an addiction.

:yeah:

:yeah:
You know its addicting when you use up your free time at the end of October to build cages instead of going deer hunting!

fatslinger they always seam to, I dont think this bunch was out to long..... they only tore one corner in the bags
I have had a skunk dig up a rock and get it under the door. I know make then out of 1/2 x 1 wire
-
Where do you guys get the mess wire to build colony traps? I got a roll but it was not a heavy enough gauge wire. I tried the local co-op and hardware store with no luck.
-
I get mine from Ace Hardware. They carry 1x1 and 1x2 in 24 inch tall 14 gauge wire. I have not found a local supply of J clips and order them by the pound through F & T.
-
Have you checked at Bleyhls farm service in pasco north side of the cable bridge? They used to have them there Bought a lot there, they also used to carry 1x1 and 1x2 to wire in 100' rolls up to six feet wide.
-
I get my 1x1 cage wire from Lowes. I found my cage clips and hog rings at Cynex farmers co-op in Everett.

Never seen J clips at Bleyhls and all their wire is now import steel. I prefer American steel for all my cages. Probably not a big deal for colonies but can be a problem with swim-thrus.
-
What gauge wire do you do you guys use? I found 1"X1/2" in 14 gauge but once it's rolled out it is awfully flimsy.
-
Look in the pet dept. they like to hide them in there.
When I lived in Pasco all the wire they sold was red brand the good wire.

14 gauge is what I use 1x1 or 1x2
-
14 gauge is plenty strong. You will be surprised how sturdy it is once it is bent into a colony. The 1x1 is my personal favorite but you can use 1x2.
