So last night I busted out my brand new cabelas 1hp grinder to do my deer burger, thinking I'm gonna knock this out in no time...WRONG. I could not get it to stay unclogged. I had the big plate on and used frozen suet. Before I bought this, for deer, I would always use the Kitchenaid stand mixer with the meat grinder attachment and it worked well. It was a little slow but it would eat anything you fed it. This cabelas grinder was getting membrane and other connective tissues wrapped around the blade and pressed into the plate. I got so frustrated that I went to the bullpen and called in the kitchenaid. I had to bench my starter and I don't know what to do know. Anyone here had any similar problems?
Thanks,
Ron

Sounds like the cutting blade is on backwards to me

Exactly my thoughts. I have had the same thing happen.
-
I have the same grinder and I just used it to grind two deer and two antelope, with no problem whatsoever. I've had it three or four years now and I've never had it clogged up to where it would stop grinding. I have trouble feeding the meat in fast enough, it grinds so fast. It does help if the meat is nearly frozen or even partially frozen.
I think Crunchy may be right. If it's clogging up that quickly, something's not right.
-
I'm gonna feel stupid if that's the case. I had the flat side towards the incoming meat, so the angle side would push it through the plate.
-
The cutter blade sits flat onto the plate with the holes !!
-
The 1hp is junk. Sell it to me for $100?
-
I had a friend do the same exact thing this year with the same grinder..... :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: After he called and I told him to turn the blade around it worked flawlessly.
Don't worry....you are not the only guy to not read the instructions. :chuckle: :chuckle:

Which is wierd cause the kitchenaid goes together the same way :dunno:
-
Actually the kitchenaid blade goes on either way.
-
I can't believe I didn't try to flip it around lol it made sense to me having it on the way I did. Shows how smart I am!

OK so I meant the cutting surfaces of the 3 blades go towards the plate with holes, anyway good deal problem solved !!

Touché sir
Boy, do I feel stupid. I figured, or hoped, it would be something simple.

I'll give you 150$ :chuckle:

Been there. When using frozen suet it really needs to be fed slowly. Especially if you run it through twice. Adding a little bit of water when mixing your meat before grinding will help as well. Processing companies also sell a Pam style spray to help.with the clogging issue as well. :twocents:
-
I do some silly things but I have yet to actually attempt to grind with the blade on backwards... yet :roll eyes:
One other important tip if you're sure its on the correct way and its still feeding slowly, you may not have screwed it together tight enough. Some times I don't put on that outer ring thingy-part (as my 4 year old calls it) tight enough and it clogs on silver seam. Tighten it up and you're good to go
-
Tip: Just had a couple that cut up wild game professionally tell me to use cured bacon as my fat next time in my burger because it lasts longer in the freezer and gives the hamburger a smokey taste. I had already did my elk so will try it as soon as cut up a deer. Sounds good to me....
-
I have that same grinder and it works great by the way.

That's all I use for fat now. Cheapest to buy bacon ends, or sometimes you can find cheap bacon on sale that works just as well.
-
Thanks for the tips! One year I used uncured bacon and it came out horrible. Been scared to use pork at all ever since, but sometime I may try cured bacon with a small batch.

I might have been a few IPA's deep when I started. That's my excuse!
-
I would suggest trying it again right away just so you know it works. I wouldn't wait until next season. That way if there is a real issue you can have it resolved before you really need it.
-
Ill give ya $160..final offer :chuckle:.....My 1hp would grind a 2x4 if I put one in...I think you found your problem..not the blades...IPA's...

Good call. My wife still has a buck tag, and I have late muzzloader elk, so it may get some action soon.
-
And as stated before - partially frozen will help immensely. I've used many grinders over the years and unless you have access to a huge commercial unit, they all work better if the meat is about half frozen.
I have the same 1HP unit and it works well. :hello:
-
Glad you got it figured out! I love my Cabelas grinder!

I have the same model and it quickly chews up anything I have fed into it.
Advice: "If you drink, don't grind; if you grind, don't drink" :chuckle:

"Hey honey! Hold my beer and watch THIS!!"

What fun is butchering/grinding without a couple adult beverages and some tunes blaring in the garage? :dunno:
-
You do it in the garage? I make a mess of my wife's kitchen :)

Adult beverages.. IPA.. :yike:

Why is everybody scared of good beer?
-
I'm afraid IPAs have their place with high fence hunts and crossbows. I know some are finely made, but I can't stand the hops flavoring. I'll take a cheap Bud Light over a really expensive IPA anyway but that's just me. :brew:
-
Well I go on high fence hunts with my crossbow while drinking IPAs. Hold my beer so I can stick this FREAK NASTY! Then while attempting to grind burger from this deer, I put the grinder blade on backwards and start a threat asking why it won't work! Mmmm beer
-
I only met that they're controversial or at least that's how I see them. Lots of love and lots of not-love.
-

Beer gives me heart burn .. I prefer Jim Beam :chuckle:
-
I'm very sarcastic

I think the grinder switch has a reverse. If you are going to do all that high fence hunting with a crossbow and beer drinking with the blade on backwards try turning the switch to reverse and see if it works any better. :chuckle:
My guess is the beer will taste the same no matter which direction the grinder motor is spinning. :brew:

anybody try that new Kirkland beer by Costco? I wanted to like it, especially at its price point (50 cents a can), but it has a slight aftertaste that makes it barely palatable. I think I'll give the rest away--assuming I can do that without having to run a background check on the recipient :chuckle:
-
My wife and I do it in the kitchen as well. This is the second time threw with the medium plate. I gotta try that Kirkland beer.....
-
Well, I'm gonna try it again. My uncle killed a bull this morning. We'll be having a cutting party this weekend, so I'll let you all know if my grinder works any better with the blade on the right way! :brew:

There you go one up on everybody. Not only beer but OTC meds while grinding :chuckle:

I would put it together and run a couple hotdogs or something through it before this weekend.,

The OTC meds just add to the experience.....we also keep the house at a happy temperature.
