My younger sister and 15 year old cousin drew the late Palouse buck tags this year and are heading over this upcoming Wednesday to hunt 4 days. Really wish I could go along but work has me stuck at home. She has a general area that she's going to hunt but she seems worried since this will be her first time hunting a new area without her dad and brothers. Anyone having any luck over there? Are the Bucks chasing yet? I'm sure any good news will make her more excited.

It depends on what kind of land you've got secured. My dads headed over there Tuesday and I'm headed over Thursday with my sister to help her out

If you don't have land secured, there isn't much public land section of state land here and there. They will be full of hunters. Saw two tag holders yesterday road hunting.

I have seen zero rutting activity. saw 3 groups of 10 does yesterday and not a buck in sight. my cousin shot a young 4 point yesterday and the tarsals were not smelly at all. im hoping it will pick up this week.

Ive seen very little rut yet. Saw two small bucks chasing their does friday evening but saw many many does that were being left alone. Saturday i didnt see really any rut activity except for a pretty decent 4x4 sparing with a spike. The spike finally had enough after about 30 minutes and wandered off. Ill be back down all week looking for a good buck I can't wait for the rut to start. :bash:

The cold front coming in should kick things in gear, I'm looking forward to it

I've had this tag twice. The first time I went opening weekend and didn't see a darn thing. The second time I went the second weekend and saw 7 legal bucks by 11am. From experience the whitetails tend to rut towards the end of this tag.

My brother will be over there next weekend hunting. Good luck everyone hunting the late season!

We have a place lined out on private property. It worked out last year with my dad killing a big buck on it. Hopefully this year works out too.

great buck!
ill be hitting it Tuesday till my tags punched! gonna go work tomorrow.

My buddy got this one on the 8th.

Thats a dandy right there. Its funny because I asked about this tag years ago when my dad drew it for the first time and a lot of the comments were they are all small bucks around the palouse... there are certainly some good bucks in the area, though I'm not sure I've seen one quite that impressive with my own eyes over there.

I got this guy last nov with the late palouse tag. Scores close to 140

Bucks are responding to rattles. (We actually had them coming in to rattling back in late September- we rattle for a few minutes, about every 35-45 minutes, and pretty aggressively). A grunt call might be helpful as well.
Roughly where in the Palouse combined unit is she hunting?

Yeah, there are definitely some good bucks around not great. You won't find much over 140's where I am at. Obviously there are rare occasions where a stud is taken. As far as the rut goes they were not rutting on Saturday. Bucks and does weren't running together. I did see some scrapes so some of the pre-rut activity was taking place. I passed on that buck my buddy took. He has let me, my wife, brother in law and step dad hunt his place for years and he was only going to be able to hunt the 8th and 9th so it was good to help him get on a good buck. There are still some good ones around, but it is HEAVILY private ground so it is tough to find access.

Goodluck, wish for snow, and be prepared to shot on the run. And pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, respect fields that are planted. Believe it or not, deer can hear your pickup running across the fields!
