Guys and gals,
I have the following items on hand and looking to make a decent coon load out of it. Funds are tight so anything outside of what I have wont be purchased... Thank you for any help in this
WADS
Fed 12S0
Fed 12S3
Fed 12S4
SHELLS
Cheddite 2/34
POWDER
Tight Wad
DuPont 700 x
Primer
Fed 209
SHOT
#4 lead buckshot
BB Steel
#2 Steel
#7.5 Lead
-
#4 lead (for the lower cost) or BB steel (fewer pellets to pick out of meat and better vitals penetration if not a head shot) would be my choices. I would not use the 7.5 lead for anything but grouse, on the ground or out of a tree, and quail.
:twocents:
-
Only data I have with your inventory still leaves you needing a different primer.
700X-21.0gr. ched209 primer. fed 12SO wad. velocity1300 9,600psi. #7.5 lead 1oz.
chedite plastic case 2 3/4"
I would not use the fed209 in this load.
#4 buck I have several loads but in all of them you need a different hull and different powder or pirmer or wad.
-
Curious, it's been many years since I've reloaded for the shotgun, what difference does the primer make? It seems to me it's not like a rifle where 15 or 20 fps might make a measurable distance. :dunno:
-
If you can get ahold of some hercco powder and 3" black double x win hulls, win waa12 wads, win 209 then I have a great #4buck load for you.
-
is 7.5 lead enough to drop a coon?
-
Here's the closest that I could find for your list. It's only good for the 7 1/2 lead - buckshot can not be substituted safely.
7 1/2 will do the job if you get close enough.
-
is 7.5 lead enough to drop a coon?
No, in my opinion, unless you are point blank, less than fifteen yards.

with shot gun the primer can spike your psi to dangerous levels! You can not work up loads for a shotgun. You must stick to published load data. I have seen people substitute primers. But just cause a load is only 9,000 psi with a ched209. Using a fed209(one of the hotter shotgun primers) could jump the pressure to 13,000 psi or more.
I strongly recommend the Lyman shotshell reloading handbook to anyone thinking of reloading shotguns!

I killed a very large coon with 7.5's. But he was at my back patio and made it to the edge of my lawn when I shot him (about 10 yards).
I'm not sure if the first shot killed him or the next 2. It was dark and I just unloaded into him to make sure he was dead. :)
-
You are probably better off just picking up a box of #6 field loads.

I to would not trust #7.5 on a coon. #4 buck or bb steel would be my choices
-
With steel BB then I will be limited to steel powder right?
-
I have a steel shot load at home using Titewad powder. However it does not go with any of your wads.
What kind of range are you shooting?
Loki- Different primers can make a large difference in shotgun pressures. Sometimes unexpected pressures depending on components. It's been a while since I looked at it but there is a Titewad recipe that will give higher pressures with a "colder" primer.

Range is usually between 10 to 30 yards on the coons. Most times out of a tree. The steel load are you using that for coons or waterfowl?
-
I shot at a coon one night with 7.5's at about 30 yards and he almost didn't even blink. It was a less than perfect shot on him as I was trying to kill him/scare him away from the barn. I thought for sure it would kill him but that was not the case.
I'd not trust them to make reliable kill shots.
-
I have not used the Titewad recipe. I have used SR7625, Unique, HS-6, SR4756 and probably a couple others with the same wad. The Titewad recipe is a reduced subsonic load. By memory it's 7/8 oz @ 900 fps. I have the wads down here in Puyallup if you want to try a handful. They are sold by Ballistic Products as the MG42.
-
#4 or bigger would be my recommendation unless you are close and are disposing of the critter.
-
I have 10 lbs of lead 4 Magnum shot. If you want to trade 7-1/2's for it lb. for lb. I'd put it in a bottle and flat rate ship it up there. That's assuming the 7-1/2 is new and not reclaimed shot.

thanks for the sweet offer, but I make my own as I have a mold and tons of lead.

I think he's talking about #4 shot, not #4buck. with the #4shot you can use your normal load or the load I listed or CP's loads to make your coon loads
-
Thanks, next time I make a trip to cabalas in January I will purchase some #4 lead.
-
What kind of coons are you looking to kill?
-
What kind? How many different kinds of raccoons are there?
-
Looking for a coon load? I'd start with dinner and a movie for the coon
:sry:

Itty bitty ones, kitty sized ones, poodle sized ones, big ones, saint bernard sized ones.... They should all be dead ones. :chuckle:

Thanks for all the inputs  Looks like I need to do more shopping for gear. :bash: After my divorce is final I will be able to afford some finer things in life, like wads and powder :chuckle:

Seth, sorry to hear about the big D, didn't know that was going on.

Why are you shooting coons? I use a .22 A shotgun will destroy the hide.

I am west of I5, cant use a 22...... Why did the chicken cross the road :chuckle: I actually am going to make some coon skin caps, have a few in the freezer already and got sick of trying to find buckshot. Bought the #4 buckshot mold and already reload steel shot shell for duck hunting, so figured why not load some coon loads as well.

Yeah for the last 3 months, best part was one of my best friends new it was coming and never said a word.... He is no longer a friend. Give me a call tonight Ed.

Maybe the modified choke helps not destroy the hide? I have yet to destroy one, and have shot 27 with my shotgun. How close are you in the shots? I am on average 20-30 yards.

nice raccoon Seth. Can I ask what your technique is for locating them. I don't have a ton around here but there are some. Pm if you like.

Nice! That's a public service. What load did you smack him with?
-
#4 buck shot factory stuff. I am down to 8 rounds..
-
On a off note, can you use plywood as stretching boards? I have plenty of plywood laying around and though of cutting it to shape for the hides....
-
I have not done it but I've seen stretching boards like that. You use a thin wood shim in there so you can get the hides off the board later.
-
Found a recipe and I am loading like a mad man
-
Willing to share? Have you gotten a chance to pattern it?
-
I'd also like to know.
-
Straight from the Hodgdon Website
-
Bought some HS6 powder this payday  I had the rest of the components :IBCOOL:
-
I'm not seeing which type of hull its for?
-
Chef in guessing lol
-
Remington plastic with .090 base
-
Sweet thanks

Field trials will commence shortly

Not sure why, say for example a .22 revolver would not be legal to use for this purpose.

may not be wise to shoot a 22 at raccoons up in a tree, if you miss it, where does the bullet go?

It would go the same place as a full load of #4 buckshot- into the air...only a lot more projectiles with similar ballistic forces.

This thread is about loads for shotguns. A 22 will not be used!

Field trials with my buckshot recipie complete. 32 yard shot, dropped him like a bad habit.

:yikes: nice coon
-
Nice coon Seth! Glad the load worked for you. I'd love to see a pic of the creations you make out of the hides.
