I have a problem. Is anyone willing to help me try to recover a deer? I will split the deer with you or you can have it. I just don't want it to go to waste. Staying at Benny's. I'm learning lessons here the hard way.
-
Damn. Wish I was over there to help!
-
What exactly is the problem?
-
I have it located and got a cart to it. It is in a gully. It probably will need to be quartered. I will try on my own but I had planned on carting it out whole.
-
First time or fairly new to the after the shot game? If I was closer I'd help. Get it gutted for the night at least. If you work in the dark cut it in half, drag each half up the gully to the cart. Then cart both halves out at once.

Possible to cut him in half and put the half on your back and walk it out then go back for the other half? My dad, uncle and grandfather used to do that. Quartering sometimes is the only way though if it is really deep and thick. Best of luck!
-
Good luck to you. Wish I were closer to help as well
-
I'd help, but my knees prevent me from going up and down hills. I hope the coyotes don't eat all of of it.....best of luck.
Where is it in the 101 ? PM me if you don't want to say on the forum.
-
Yes, first deer. 25 degrees now so that is good. I will get as much meat as possible on my own. Update tomorrow. Thanks for suggestions.
-
I've made a lot of deer easier to handle with just a knife in the field. You do have it gutted I hope. Locate the short rib inside the body, stick your knife between the short rib and the next rib and cut to the brisket. Then cut to the spine. Do the same on the other side and finish the cut across the top of the spine. Knee on the hind quarters, grab the head or neck and pull back till you break the spine. You should have 2 easier to work with pieces.
-
How far of a hike in? And how far from colville?
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
-
Id be there if i was closer! Good luck.
-
If you have to leave it overnight, gut him and try to hang him off the ground as much as possible...Hopefully that will make it a little more difficult for the hungry creatures of the night...Good Luck!

Awesome. We plan to meet at 7 at the parking lot in front of visitors center.

How did everything go this morning?
-
Apologies if I double post here but doing this on a phone. The morning was awesome. Ridgerat coordinated recovery. Major thanks. At first daybreak we located the deer. No critters had found it and the temps were in the 20s. We got the deer out and everything went well. Big thanks to the forum members. Ok, the first deer had a learning curve. I'll try to figure a way to post a picture.

I showed up at 8:40 and drove up Bisbee. Sorry I wasn't earlier, but I knew Ratt would be the man of the day.......

Yea, they gave me some Wetside guff but I probably deserve what I get. I thew a few complicated chemistry words their way to keep them on their heels.

Cool story bro :dunno:
Where's the PICS!?

I was short on pictures but here is one that will give you the idea. As is probably obvious by now it was my first deer. At 50 years old I'm getting a late start on deer hunting. Never got to go as a kid and learn my lessons young. I got my bow a couple years ago and got in as much practice as possible since then before going after a deer. As it turned out actually putting down the deer wasn't the hardest part. I spent the morning and evening trying to set up an ambush on this doe and finally got to where I could get a good clean shot. Getting it back to the truck went much better after help arrived. After gutting, skinning, it went to the butcher at 76 lbs. I'm confident that the second deer will go easier. I'll take my 16 year old next time to help with lifting and dragging. Thanks again for everyone who helped out. You know who you are. Hope to post a first buck picture next year.
-
Congrats on the harvest and I would like to say it is nice to see you made sure the photo was presented as not to offend folks. Glad the folks I called could help.
Your first deer is a Trophy in anyones book.

Awesome all the help that came to you. next time when you take that 16 year old make sue it is two deer you both need to pack out.
-
Sorry I didn't help out, I just read this thread this morning. Thats a good size doe. You might make a note to self, only shoot nice bucks in hell holes. :chuckle:
-
Great story, better ending . Game animals are to be shot where you find them, getting them out is all part of it and you soon realize what value a good hunting partner(s) is. I hope you and your boy get out next year, more memories for sure and just FYI does eat much better in my opinion, bucks just look cooler :chuckle:.

Class Act. One of the best threads of 2014 IMO
-
Thanks guys. I'm still kicking myself over some of the mistakes that I made with this first deer. I was very fortunate to have the help of some of the folks on the forum to bail me out. I definitely need to try to get one of my sons out there next year to help with some of the heavy lifting. :chuckle: Got the deer back from the butcher and vacuum sealed it up before it went into baskets in the freezer. After reading one of the other threads on here somewhere I probably would have been OK to just directly freeze with the plastic wrap and double paper wrap from the butcher. Actually, I would love to figure out how to butcher/grind up my own by the time that net year rolls around. Merry Christmas everyone! I got my present this year.
-
nice story and glad you found some help!
Can be overwhelming down in the bottom of a hole somewhere and the truck is way up over there somewhere.
wish I could have come help
-
 Thanks for helping him out Ridge. Glad all is well
-
It is very simple to do your own processing. Takes some time to clean/trim up the meat (hair/blood shot) But is pretty simple. I'd be glad to give some pointers. Glad you have a full freezer!!
