Title: Looking to hunt Ellensburg to Moses lake area
Post by: fatrobber on November 20, 2014, 12:51:04 AM
Me and a couple rookie yote hunters are looking/hoping to find a spot somewhere out there to maybe do some calling. Not looking for personal honey holes but is there some places out there to get out and try. Never hunted out that way only heard of great success out there. Any sort of directoon or help would be great.

Howdy,  There is a sporting goods store in Moses Lake, [ I cant recall the name of it ] start there, for info.  I was camping & fishing at Potholes, MarDon Resort last month. The yotes were sure howlin & singin up a storm over at the Seep Lakes area. I would check the regs. to make sure its legal to hunt over there.  Good luck & post your results.

go to mardon resort, go to any bar in any town and you will get lots of places especially if you buy the talker a beer, go to motels or best of all talk to a school bus driver or a mail carrier.   mike w

Lots of public land to hunt- Colockum Wildlife Area, LT Murray Wildlife Area, Wenas Wildlife Area, Naneum Ridge State Forest, Potholes Wildlife Area.

Google any of those and you can bring up maps that will show you where the public land is. There's no lack of places to hunt coyotes over there.

I'd say that most of us that hunt the area really don't like to give out hot spots as it takes a lot of looking to find honey holes that aren't overrun with other callers.  That said there is a lot of public land over there and almost all of it is decent coyote country.  Learning to find public land, scout sign, pick stands is part of the learning curve of calling coyotes.  I could give you an area that I hunt and can almost guarantee that I could call a coyote in at and you could go to it 10 times and never see a coyote because the stand is very dependent on weather conditions and approach and surprisingly if everything else is right sound selection makes little difference, they'll come to just about anything.

Booking a hunt with a guide and not worrying too much about the number of dogs you see but gleaning as much as you can about his stand selection , stand approach and taking it back the areas you want to hunt  can shorten your learning curve.

One caution about the Seeps lake area, much of it is NWR and coyote hunting is illegal but it is interspersed with state land that is open, good maps are a must.

i'm in your same boat, but you seemed to get better info than when i asked, lol, one thing another member said to me, all the advice is great, but this is the internet right? so take everything with a  grain of salt, ultimately double check regs, look at maps because its your ticket if your not following regs, not the guy who suggests an area/road. By no means am I saying i'm an expert, I've yet to be Yote hunting, but plan on scouting a few areas during the thanksgiving weekend in/around Moses/soap lake.

Good luck!

As others stated There is a ton of good coyote ground in Moses Lake,I have been calling the area for going on 19 years now, If your from the wet side its going to be hard for you to find good coyote ground without knowing land owners. Public ground gets called to death. plan on spending a lot of time and gas to find good areas . If your not real experianced its going to be even harder for you as you will not know what good coyote ground looks like . Not being a azz hole but welcome to the world of predator calling . It takes a lot of time, money and leg work to excell at this.Hire a guide and learn the ropes it will save you alot of frustration and money . Best of luck to you . Jerry .

I appreciate all the positive feedback. I definitely don't want to step on anyone's toes and be in someone's spot. Just want to get out and have a great time. Learn some things and maybe take dog or two
