Title: Moose Measles AKA tapeworm larva.... Mmm Mmmmmmm!
Post by: Payne on November 24, 2014, 12:23:10 PM
So we cut up my buck over the weekend and ran into these white spots that at first we thought were just little bits of fat floating around in the meat. They remind me of tomato seeds or a sesame seed.

We (my family) have been hunting a long time and have never heard nor seen of them before... Anyone else ever run into these buggers? ... particularly in Wa state? Looks like they are a lot more common in Canada and Alaska and sounds like they are not harmful to humans just kinda gross. I think that we picked out most if not all from our meat... Other than that the meat looks wonderful and I'm definitely going to eat it.

I rarely process an animal without finding at least a couple, both WA and WY critters.  Buddy shot one that had too many for him, grossed him out.  Gave it to an old guy who laughed and reminisced that when he was a kid, all the livestock had them too (before antibiotics).

Makes me wonder. Have I never seen them, or have they been there all along and I thought they were something else?
Please dont tell my wife!!

I have seen them and at times have been quite grossed out by the volume.  Thankfully not what I have been processing or eating.

Not sure if I could stomach that.  I have never seen them in any deer or elk that I have processed.

I kind of wondered if we havn't run by some of these in the past, but just not very many. so few we thought nothing of them. The deer we just cut up had probably around 200 of them... haha oh well, for a late rutting buck this meat is going to be awesome, had no smell to the meat...

Yeah, I injected crushed garlic into the muscle before I cut it into steaks.....

Ya know. I shouldnt get too excited about this. I need to kill something before I'll ever maybe see them. :dunno:

Cut very few out of all the deer I've got. I'm sure I missed some along the way, but I'd say rare at best here. :twocents:  I process my own game and am very meticulous.

Been cutting deer for 30 years.  See it all the time...and that's why I add Mustard Seed to my Summer Sausage!

Well, since freezing kills them and humans can't be infected by them, I'm not worried. Thanks for posting.  :hello:

Just got a cow moose that was full of em & they were big, thought they were inerds or fat but then they started wiggling. Only in the guts & didn't find any in the meat. No worries here.

The moose I got a couple years ago had a lot of these. All my research said they were common and not an issue. Picked most of them out on principle, but know I missed a lot. No ill effects. You can always take the advice of the Alberta game department: "If they bother you put some gravy on it."
