Title: Is this a triploid or broodstock rainbow trout?
Post by: johng on November 28, 2014, 09:55:26 AM

It can only be one or the other, right?   :chuckle:

Got him trolling a blue fox yesterday.... fought pretty good- not like a smallie but still a fun, albeit short, fight to the canoe because I didn't want him to come off the hook.  Not sure how it will taste but the meat looks good.  Let me know what you guys think.

Thanks,

- Jg

Triploid imo

It's an ugly son of a gun I'll tell you that. The broodstock fish I've caught usually have scarred up or bashed up looking faces from spending their lives in a tank, so I agree this is probably a triploid. Did you weigh it?

I would say brood-stocker. Fins are well rubbed (from long time in the cement pond). Maybe he just learned to not mash his face into the wall.

Biggest factor is the spawner colors and hook-jaw of a male ready to spawn. Triploids are created to never reach spawner maturity. If the fish has well-developed milt sacks, it's definately a broodstocker.

From what I've heard the triploiding process is not 100% effective and some weird "triploid mutants" result- could be one of those  :dunno:

Looks like a triploid to me. Fins are in too good of shape compared to brooders that I have caught and I have never caught a brooder with big shoulders, but have caught trips with large shoulders and with slightly hooked jaws/

So they still get that hook. Good to know...most I've seen didn't seem to have that much though. Still like to hear if he found any sperm sacks in it. That would be telling. It is a weird looking fish.

Interesting. I've caught thousands of trips and never seen a hook.

Okay- this had me interested enough to do a little research.

Found this: http://wildlife.utah.gov/fes/pdf/vol_12-1.pdf (http://wildlife.utah.gov/fes/pdf/vol_12-1.pdf)

"Triploid males still produce sperm, but the sperm duct is blocked, preventing fertilization."
and
"Half of these develop as true males, but the other half are sex-reversed and become phenotypic males, but are genotypic females (i.e., they look and produce sperm like males, but genetically they are female)."

So what I am guessing is the fish in the pic is either a really frustrated male triploid with his 'sperm duct blocked' (ouch!), or the other male/female triploid...which is too strange for words.

We are planting more and more trips for the state these days in a lot of the lakes.

Even more interesting. Every one I have caught and have seen caught was there or raised from rufus as well. From 1 to 29 plus lbs and still never seen a hook. Several hundred over 9 lbs as well.

That is one gnarly looking fish .Ive probably only caught 20 triploids but none have ever had pink meat, all white. I don't think they last long enough in our westside stagnant lakes. I wanna see how this fish cut! I like the variety of items on his bench.Bible , pill bottle, big ugly slimy fish  :chuckle:

:yeah: I've caught quite a few trips on Rufus over the last eight years or so, no hooked jaws.  Not nearly as many as mtnmuley, but enough of the bigger ones to share his opinion.

I don't anymore. It's the state record a friend caught. Was well over 30  before he got It to a certified scale. I'll see if It can get a pic of it in a kiddy pool with ice. Amazing sight for sure.

Nice fish what ever it is!  Looks like a de-formed diploid....A huge misunderstanding is big fish = triploid.

Well, thank you for all the comments- scientific, funny, honest and complimentary.  Yes, it isn't the prettiest looking fish.  :)
It beat getting skunked that day though and it was fun to catch.

SO..... the question some people wanted answered, including myself, was how did it taste?  I am happy to report that it tasted just fine.  It wasn't mushy and baked at 350 in the oven with the standard of lemon, butter, salt, pepper and some parsley it was good.  Not awesome but it didn't have to go to the dogs so I am thankful for that.

Tight Lines!
