Had the opportunity to watch a scenario unfold that I had seen once before and for a second time, I did not have a camera on me that would reach far enough to record it. Was crystal clear through decent 10X glass. I was exercising my dogs in the wheat stubble field behind my home. I did not have time to go for a hunt with them that morning so just wanted to run some energy off of them. Off in the distance I could see several white tail does moving strangely. Had a look through the binocs and could see what was happening more clearly. 3 does, two older and one of this year’s crop, we being harassed by 4 coyotes. 2 of the yotes would get close enough for the older does to face them down, while from behind, a 3rd yote would attempt to sneak in and hamstring the younger doe that would hang back. Just as the 3 yote would be a few yds from the young doe, one of the older does would run back to protect it. The 4th yote was observing this from further up the hill, it seemed to be a sort of detached sentry. This scenario repeated itself several times before the yote attempting to hamstring the young doe must have noted the movement of my dogs and quickly retreated into a shallow draw. The 2 yotes that were baiting the older does beat feet over the hill, while the does went back to the draw from which they came. The 4th yote seem to present an air of detachment and was in no big hurry to retreat. A few days later I pulled a trail cam card from the trail cam I had in the draw the deer went back to and often hang out in. All three does were still alive and well 3 day after the incident. While I’d hate to be labeled a “profiler”, using the SWAG method, I’d guess them there dawgs was up ta no good. But being an animal of “privilege”, what else would I assume? :dunno:

Never fails! Go for a walk without a rifle you will see coyotes. Happens every single time.

I once came upon four coyotes that had a fork-horn mule deer backed up to a sheer drop rim rock....on the top, so the drop off was behind the deer. His rump was all bloodied, and the reason I had hiked up there was I had seen him through binoculars, and he had that humped up look, of a wounded animal. Well, me and my buddy got up there, and the coyotes scattered. We were under-gunned, hunting muzzle loader season. There was a small bowl like depression, about 100 yards wide, and the coyotes had the high ground, and nowhere for the deer to run.
When the coyotes left, the deer started off kind of unsteadily, but in about 300 yards he warmed up, and lit the afterburners. I'd like to think he made it.

Probably 30 + years ago, I was at a friends place and and we were out moving cattle early in the morining. We rounded a bend into a valley and we noted a yote digging after a ground squirl. I don' t believe he even heard my friends dog coming at him at full speed. The dog hit the yote and he rolled a couple of times and hit the ground with his afterburners lit. It ran about 50 - 60 yards to a nearly verticle rock wall that was at least a couple of feet higher than I could reach. Yote ran straight up the wall and disappeared over the top scratchin for all traction he could find.
Remember my friend and I lookin at each other sayin, did we really just see that. He must have found enough traction in the rough basalt for his momentum to carry him over the top. Had a saddle 30-30, but this all took place in a span of about 10 seconds.

That's funny right there! I've seen them go right off high cliffs basically. 12-14 ft straight down and they bailed right off like it was nothing!
