Title: Late season success
Post by: clindsayrun on December 03, 2014, 07:48:38 PM
Shot this guy in the afternoon on the late archery opener, unit 209/215.

I was way back off the road, sneaking along as the new snow was just starting to come down hard. I saw his antlers coming over a small rise toward me on the same trail, maybe 40-50 yards out. I dove off the trail into a couple of small trees. I managed to get an arrow knocked and the release clipped. I could hear him coming and suddenly he was right there. He stopped five feet from me. I'm not sure if he really didn't see me all that well, or just didn't quite know what he was looking at. He turned around and took a step or two at stopped. His head, and eyes, were obscured behind a tree with his entire body just hanging out there. I slowly came to full draw and took the shot at less than 12 feet away. Perfect! It was super intense to be in that close. Not a monster, but no way I'm passing at 12 feet. He didn't go far and piled up. I got him taken care of and stashed away and hiked out in the dark. Made fresh tracks with a good set of chains the next morning and hiked back in with the pack board. I got him out in a couple of trips. Good times!

I took this tasty 1x2 blackie buck during late muzzleloading season here on the west side during the recent snowy cold snap, we also saw seven other deer all shooters while out elk hunting. Had to pass on a nice 4x4 elk I saw through the binos during a white out snow blitz at very first light as the dark blob at the end of my muzzy sight was not the sight picture I wanted to see at 100 yards in a white out. No way will I shoot without a clean kill shot, just not how I roll!  :bdid:

Clindsayrun, very nice job and congrats on a nice buck, well earned and deserved.

Cool looking area in the first pic. I have hunted up there and never seen a clear cut with trees like that

How cool to have that buck walk by at such close range!    Which hair did you choose for your aiming point.   ;)

Great spread on that buck.  Nice job!
