Title: Machias' 2014-2015 Virginia Trapping Season
Post by: Machias on December 05, 2014, 03:55:46 AM: I will mostly be trapping during the weekends which is kind of tough for K9 sets, but going to have a lot of fun this year. Just got permission to trap a 3500 acre chunk of land that has a couple of swamps and 2 miles of river frontage along some really nice ag fields and woodlots. Just a beautiful area.

This morning though I'm on cloud 9!! I set three cage traps day before yesterday and had a nice coon yesterday. Reset and this morning had a real nice surprise, all three traps full and one was a really nice red fox. I'll post some photos shortly! :)

Post by: Machias on December 05, 2014, 03:56:39 PM: I've seen a few photos of them, but I've never caught one and never dreamed I catch one in such a short trap. Plus I caught him on Vanilla Wafers. Very pleasant surprise this morning! Coons are way down this year, probably looking at $12 to $15 even if you can find a buyer. I'll be sending all mine to the tannery again this year.

Post by: Machias on December 06, 2014, 01:21:11 PM: Standard coon size trap. Set out several 330s and 220s today and some dogproofs and a few rats sets. Looking forward to tomorrows check. This 3500 acres farm I got permission to trap is like a dream come true. Lots of fields and creeks and 2 miles of river frontage. I'll never be able to trap is all. Found some whopper bobcat tracks. Can't start trapping for k9s and cats until after the first of the year. So excited!

Second time in 2 years I have been given permission to trap on a big chunk of property, only to have the permission withdrawn almost as fast as I got it. The 3500 acres which has NEVER been trapped has been put on hold. The lady who owns it has NEVER even been to the property. She has given it to her kids who have just told the Farm manager no hunting on the property so he is putting everything on hold. They come to the property once a year. :bash: :bash:

I know how you feel. I get to trap 10 days out of every month. It gets to be a pain in the ass when your running a decent sized line. Keep it up!

Filled up the hip waders. Dang it's a little chilly this time of the year. :o Was 28 degrees this morning. Got a couple of beaver and otter sets in.

Post by: Machias on December 25, 2014, 08:12:24 AM: I'm trapping three different small farms. I use a bait from Keg Creek Lures & Baits called Coon Crunch, I also sometimes use a marshmallow and I also use cat food with a few drops of liquid smoke.

Post by: Machias on January 14, 2015, 03:43:00 PM: Had to pull traps for a few days and had a bit of a dry spell. Two coons yesterday and one coon and a young beaver today. One of the coons yesterday managed to get both is front feet into a Bridger #5 coilspring I had set up on a drowner.

You might even have more luck in Downtown Chicago. I just read an article about "City" dwelling coyotes there, estimated at over 2000 in the downtown area. :yike:

Post by: Machias on January 25, 2015, 08:32:14 AM: Dang it, this is what I found this morning. I tried standing on the pan myself and could not set the trap off. The polyfil under the pan was a little block of ice. I had 4 other sets in the same area and all four were able to be set off. Just this set. Too funny. I had to pull all my canine sets as I'm headed down to North Carolina for a few days for work.

Post by: Machias on January 28, 2015, 06:44:55 PM: Thanks! I'd love to snag one, but there are not many in the area I'm trapping. 25 miles west of where I'm trapping their numbers go up pretty good. Same thing with otter, 30 miles east and 45 miles south of me, lots of otters. I just don't have the time here with the way traffic is to go that far on a daily basis. I was considering taking a week long trip up to the mountains in western VA and spend a week targeting bobcats and coyotes, but couldn't make it happen this year. I had to pull all my traps this past Sunday as I'm down in North Carolina this week for work.
