I will mostly be trapping during the weekends which is kind of tough for K9 sets, but going to have a lot of fun this year. Just got permission to trap a 3500 acre chunk of land that has a couple of swamps and 2 miles of river frontage along some really nice ag fields and woodlots. Just a beautiful area.
This morning though I'm on cloud 9!! I set three cage traps day before yesterday and had a nice coon yesterday. Reset and this morning had a real nice surprise, all three traps full and one was a really nice red fox. I'll post some photos shortly! :)

Sweet!!!!
Off to a good start
-
Love the fox!
-
how much is coon selling for these days? cool fox, the coons dont even seem to care that their fuzzy butts are in a trap :chuckle:
-
Never seen a fox in a box trap lol... They are little different looking than the ones we have up here.
-
I've seen a few photos of them, but I've never caught one and never dreamed I catch one in such a short trap. Plus I caught him on Vanilla Wafers. Very pleasant surprise this morning! Coons are way down this year, probably looking at $12 to $15 even if you can find a buyer. I'll be sending all mine to the tannery again this year.
-
Nice job  Your able to use foothold traps there aren't you? Looking forward to tagging along this year.
-
Nice surprise for you. What size is that trap?
-
Standard coon size trap. Set out several 330s and 220s today and some dogproofs and a few rats sets. Looking forward to tomorrows check. This 3500 acres farm I got permission to trap is like a dream come true. Lots of fields and creeks and 2 miles of river frontage. I'll never be able to trap is all. Found some whopper bobcat tracks. Can't start trapping for k9s and cats until after the first of the year. So excited!
-
Really cool! Man I'd love to trap a fox.
-
Tagging along for the season. good luck
-
Couple of coons today in my DPs, sorry forgot the camera in the truck.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hunt101.com%2Fdata%2F500%2Fmedium%2F001175.JPG&hash=c020c0973367ee25be9eafb72b931a1a1a04959b)
-
That one on the left looks BIG.
-
How much do fox go for back East? So different looking than AK fox lol.
-
$30
-
Awesome, I'm glad you were able to get set up with such a good place to trap back there. :IBCOOL:
-
Another medium sized coon tonight in a DP.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hunt101.com%2Fdata%2F500%2Fmedium%2F002163.JPG&hash=7efd984b3ae87f996506e9002835a324a17f030d)
-
I sure miss my DPs. Great start to the season
-
WOW ..That's crazy you caught that Red in a live trap ..never heard of such a thing  :brew:
-
Frustrating as all heck. Second time in 2 years I have been given permission to trap on a big chunk of property, only to have the permission withdrawn almost as fast as I got it. The 3500 acres which has NEVER been trapped has been put on hold. The lady who owns it has NEVER even been to the property. She has given it to her kids who have just told the Farm manager no hunting on the property so he is putting everything on hold. They come to the property once a year. :bash: :bash:
-
that's a major bummer, sorry to hear....
-
I got to walk the property on Sat and there was a huge set of bobcat tracks. I was already thinking how nice he was going to look on a board drying. :(
-
Sorry to hear that!
-
Looks like this thread could be kinda bleak this year. Sorry to hear about that.
-
I'll still get some trapping in, but mostly only a weekend line which really makes it tough to catch very many critters and is really tough trying to target K9s and cats.
-
Another coon in a DP.

-
Sorry to hear you lost your spot :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash:
-
I had two cage traps set last night. Nice to shine your light on your trap and see three sets of eyes looking back. Nice triple on coons!! I'll post a photo tonight.
-
fleshing coons :puke: :chuckle: Your doing great!
-
Coons not bad you just got to let the fat get cold.

Oh baby, those $5 coon!! :chuckle:

Nicely furred coon from this morning.

Poor thing

I know how you feel. I get to trap 10 days out of every month. It gets to be a pain in the ass when your running a decent sized line. Keep it up!
-
Nice job Machias
-
I can't wait for Jan 3rd to get here. Then I can finally start setting some fox, yote and bobcat sets. They are open now, but with dog season in for deer it's not prudent to set K9 sets.

They get to hunt deer with dogs over there?
-
Yes, not my cup of tea, tried it a couple of times, did not enjoy it at all.
-
Want to know what really stinks, wearing hip waders when you should have been wearing chest wader. :yike: All the way up to my belly button. Filled up the hip waders. Dang it's a little chilly this time of the year. :o Was 28 degrees this morning. Got a couple of beaver and otter sets in.
-
Good luck with the otters and beaver, stay safe out there
-
Good luck on the beaver. I've been saving a good beaver area just waiting until the ice is perfect!
-
Didn't have to wait too long, first beaver set of the year, set yesterday. :)

One thing about ditching Washington, you get to play with "real" traps. Nice job Fred  Looking foreard to your first fox.

Your season looks like it is starting off nicely Machias. Good job   two thumbs up

Got another nice beaver this morning, 55 pounder, same set as yesterday, 330 in front of a castor mound set on the North Anna River in Virginia. I'll post a photo tonight.

That's a cool picture. How long a stretch of the river do you run?
-
Just under a mile.

Picked up another coon this morning. Sure like using these dogproofs!

Great job!!!

Your killing the racoons  I really want to get a few more of them. I think they are the easiest things I've skinned so far.

Christmas Eve coon

-
That place must be crawling with coons. What do you use for bait in those dog proofs?
-
I'm trapping three different small farms. I use a bait from Keg Creek Lures & Baits called Coon Crunch, I also sometimes use a marshmallow and I also use cat food with a few drops of liquid smoke.
-
That sounds like a good recipe.
-
Good reading, thanks for the posts and Merry Christmas!
-
Thanks Dale!
41 pounder from this morning.

Had to pull traps for a few days and had a bit of a dry spell. Two coons yesterday and one coon and a young beaver today. One of the coons yesterday managed to get both is front feet into a Bridger #5 coilspring I had set up on a drowner.

Had a fun morning this morning. Yesterday I got a new farm to trap, went in and put in 3 new sets and had a nice big female and male waiting for me this morning. Caught the female on a T-Bone set and the male on a scent post set.

Nice work Fred
You might even have more luck in Downtown Chicago. I just read an article about "City" dwelling coyotes there, estimated at over 2000 in the downtown area. :yike:
-
I read that, no hunting seasons, no trapping seasons, lots of food in the form of small dogs and cats. They love it!
-
I like the videos
-
Thanks, I'll try and be steadier next time.

Should I add this to the Scoreboard? :)

That's funny right there! Not mouse proof

That will fix that little bugger :rockin:
JC :hello:

Dang it, this is what I found this morning. I tried standing on the pan myself and could not set the trap off. The polyfil under the pan was a little block of ice. I had 4 other sets in the same area and all four were able to be set off. Just this set. Too funny. I had to pull all my canine sets as I'm headed down to North Carolina for a few days for work.

-
Nice thread. Are you trying to trap for bobcats too?
-
Thanks! I'd love to snag one, but there are not many in the area I'm trapping. 25 miles west of where I'm trapping their numbers go up pretty good. Same thing with otter, 30 miles east and 45 miles south of me, lots of otters. I just don't have the time here with the way traffic is to go that far on a daily basis. I was considering taking a week long trip up to the mountains in western VA and spend a week targeting bobcats and coyotes, but couldn't make it happen this year. I had to pull all my traps this past Sunday as I'm down in North Carolina this week for work.
-
Reset yesterday when I got back and had 2 coons and a beaver this morning. Photos later.
-
This one set has caught 8 beaver so far!!

Sorry for the fuzzy photo. Put in a few sets yesterday and had this guy this morning. I had a DP protecting a dirthole and either this coon or another one stole my bait out of a yote set. :)

Not bad for only being able to trap part time and run a fairly small line. Having fun!

I pulled my traps last week and the season ends on Sat. Thanks for tagging along this year and allowing me to share my little trapline! Maybe by next winter I can share my "Idaho" line!! :)

Was wondering how you were going to bring those beaver carcasses back for bear season. You driving or gonna do carry-on? :chuckle:

All my furs are getting tanned this year. Lots of projects in the works for family gifts and such. Got several slippers, mittens and hats to make and a couple of ear muffs. :)

Great thread Fred  I want to see some of your slippers you make.
