Title: GPS question ??
Post by: Tbob on December 18, 2014, 06:44:35 PM
So I'm going on a hunt in AZ for mulies in January with a buddy, was wondering about my garmin GPS, do I need to remove my WA hunt maps chip when I get to AZ or will it recognize that I'm in a different state and work there with my WA chip still in it? Hope that makes sense? Just wondering if the chip has to be removed to work in AZ? Thanks all!!

I'd take it out just to be safe from loosing it. I forget and leave my Washington map in when I go wolf hunting in Idaho and it does not recognize it.

Yes. The GPS will only accept one chip, and each state requires a different chip if you are referring to the Hunting GPS products.

Okay. Cool! Thanks for the heads up! I'm actually more worried about removing and losing it. Ha! That's why I was hoping to just leave it in. Nice and safe in there. I'll take it out and leave it home somewhere safe. I'll be sure and tell the girl where I left it. That way I won't forget and loose it. Getting forgetful in my old age! Thanks again for the heads up!!

If you don't plan on getting an AZ chip, leaving the WA one in doesn't affect anything and like you mentioned, it's protected where you won't lose it. :twocents: Just don't lose your gps,  lol.

Yeah, now that's what I was wondering, if I just leave my Wa chip in and turn it on in AZ will it work on the basic gps function? I know it won't show the gmu's and private property like my Wa chip does, but my gps will still keep track of me in AZ evn if I leave my wa chip in right? Confused...

Yes, that won't make any difference having your Washington maps loaded. You just won't have any kind of map for Arizona. The GPS still knows where you are, you'll just be looking at a blank screen. You  can still use it to find your way back to your vehicle, or to any other waypoint you may set. Also it's nice when you don't have any maps to drive around with it on in your hunting area so you can at least see where the roads are.

You might be able to download some free maps for Arizona from this site:

There are a lot of roads down here, depending upon where you are hunting. Some are better mapped/GPS'ed than others  :bash:

My Garmin recognizes the chip as primary. If you leave the WA chip in then you'll have to scroll deep into the Settings to select the basemap.

I learnd this when I went to CO and put in a CO detail chip. When I got back to WA all I got was a blank screen. My 2 cents is to take out the WA chip when out of State.
