So Jan 3rd was the last day for rifle deer season here. The hunting club I belong to wanted to put on a deer drive on one of it's little used properties. I signed up to participate. Next thing I know I'm in charge. Not sure how that worked out but I took it on. I went down to the property three times last week and hiked about 16 miles in all. Putting out ribbons for standers, identifying shooting lanes and ribbons for drivers. Problem with this property is it is surrounded on all four sides by properties leased by hound clubs. Saw lots of deer tracks, and each one of them had hound tracks behind them. The property was clear cut a few years ago so it is one huge briar patch. Anyways ended up having 20 guys show up. Right in the middle of the first drive a hound race starts on the property to the south of us and the dogs run the deer right in between the drivers and the standers. The line of drivers manages to influence the deer and it swings south right into a stander. Boom deer down. Club member gets on the radio and is excited to tell us all he got a doe. You guys will not believe how big this deer is.

He got 17 pounds back from the butchers today. Man I can't wait to get back to some decent size deer. On a good note I did make contact with the neighbor who has a massive beaver pond and got permission to trap. :)

Looks like John Goodman was the lucky hunter! :chuckle:

first reaction was awesome way to go! but it seems like kind of a waste would have been 35lbs of meat next year. hope he puts those 17 pounds to good use.

His nickname is Tiny. That's also on his license plate and he had a hitch carrier and had the deer on it. Ment to take a photo with his deer next to his license plate. :)

Looks like the typical size of the deer I shoot. Congrats to Tiny. Reminds me of a guy named Tiny over at Cashmere. He owned a fruit stand/ grocery store over there. He was so big they used to haul him around in the back of a pickup truck where he sat in a big recliner. Those were the days!!

I've spit roasted little whitetail fawns like that, they are spectacular. If you are somewhere you can legally shoot lots of antlerless, those 17lbs are better than prime beef tenderloin.

I wouldn't shoot it but I'd eat it if somebody else did.
I shot a hostile bear this year that was about that size :chuckle:

Tender and tasty.
Looks about the size of a doe I took several years ago. Spent the early morning hours sicker than crap chumming along the bottom of reprod with no success. So I curled up on the seat of the truck and figured I would sleep there until just before dark and try to find a spot on the way out for the next morning. Woke up about 20 mins before dark, driving out saw a clear cut I thought might be good so I got out of the truck. Nothing in the clearcut, but it looked promising so that would be where I started in the morning. Turned to go back to the truck and there's 3 does standing there looking at me. Well shoot, rifle is in the truck which is running with the radio blaring.
I go over, get the rifle out of the truck, picked a doe that gave me a nice clean neck shot since I was using my .300mag on little blacktails. Boom... I get over to the doe, dang.... my black lab was almost bigger than this fawn was. I felt bad, but it was tasty eating.

Personally I would be ashamed to shoot a deer that small. Maybe it's just me. :dunno:

i shot one about that size one time (ok, several times :bash:). had a doe tag and on a windy, miserable, freezing day, we spot this doe out about 250 yards in some rose bushes. I figure I can hit her at that range and swing my rifle in her direction. She walked behind a big rose bush and when she stepped out on the other side :bfg:!! then the doe took off running, while her fawn lay dead :bash: :bash:. but you wanna talk about TENDER?!?!?! :cue: :EAT: :EAT: WHOOEE!! that was some good (albeit a small amount of) meat!

The hound hunters were not very popular with the guys I hunted with when I was stationed back there, but man was nice to have some time to hunt deer. Had some good times.

In the SE, most of the deer are tiny. Bucks with nice racks in the 100-120 lb range; very small. You can take several per year. In part of AL and other southern states, you can take 4/day.

I would learn the gutless method real quick down there. :chuckle:

Can you imagine taking it to the butcher? Guy behind the counter would be saying, "Dang, that's one huge rabbit!"

Fred, can you use rimfire for deer in VA? I think you can in the south, or at least centerfire >.22.

This is common in VA, was stationed there years ago, MOST of the clubs require shotgun only (due to dogs). Also, a lot of areas are shotgun only. They have a dog handler/tracker, private or leased lands, and park pickups a few hundred yards apart in the fields against tree lines, put the lawn chair in bed and set up shop.... not my cup of tea.
