Title: Pig roast
Post by: carlyoungs on January 14, 2015, 07:24:57 PM
So next month is my daughters 1st birthday. We are having a BBQ at our house with about 50 people. I am planning a whole pig about a 100 pounds. I want to do it on a rotisserie BBQ but it don't own one. I looked online at rental places and they want about $155 a day to rent one. I was hoping there was someone close who could help me out to loan me a rotisserie grill for a day. I can help you out in other means but I can't justify spending that much to borrow a grill for one day. Thanks Carl

Just build a block pit for half the price and  have it forever. Plus It's awesome in the summer time with company, time and beer.

I was thinking that but a rotisserie sounds easier

Pretty much build a fire, shovel in coals from fire in the block pit when needed. Pull off when at temp. Sit on table and let people pull pieces that they want. It took me about 30 minutes to build my pit and 30 for the lid. Pretty easy stuff. If you were closer I'd say come grab my blocks and grate and assemble at your house for the day.

You can also use charcoal and just add coal when needed. This cook I started with a full charcoal chimney, once it burning good I dumped it in the bottom of the pit and added applewood chunks. 3 hours later added a single shovel of charcoal and more wood chunks and didn't need to touch it again. Total of six hour cook with 15 minutes of time from me to cook. Just a thought for ya. Did this one last summer. Gave away the blocks but still have the grate and lid. Should be about $30.00 in blocks. You are welcome to borrow the grate and lid if you want. Hawgdawg also has a pig pit that he may rent you.

I wish you were closer. I built a BBQ for a pig 15 years ago and you can have it for the taking.

The pig is on the BBQ in the right foreground. We didn't use the rotisserie, just draped foil over it to keep the heat in. The piggie cooked a lot faster than we planned - hardly needed to get up at dawn! It was done at ten AM and dinner wasn't until 2-3 PM. If you happen to be driving a pea cup near Gig Harbor, come get it.
