Post by: gasman on January 15, 2015, 04:38:35 PM
Ok, Im going to give sturgeon a try this year. Never been, I have no idea where to go or what time of year is best  :dunno:

I got ahold of Ribka (we have talked about going for a few years now)  and told him to pick a date and I bring my boat over and go after them big prehistoric bad boys  :fishin: he has all the knowledge on it, I am totaly lost, Im just the fat guy with the boat  :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: Any info on time, when and where to fish for them would be helpful.

im not asking for his knowledge, Im asking for mine  :dunno:

I got Halibut gear but thats about as far a it goes  :peep:

I guess all I can say more it "School Me"  :brew: :brew: :brew: :brew: :brew:

If you want to come this far, I'll take you, show you. Keepers are open now below the dam 30 minutes away, at the house opens in a few weeks. Over size whenever. Most fun is late June early July with the shad run. Big weight medium hook bottom with salmon belly, roll mop, squid, whole shad, some scent.

I know a few others in the group would also like to try. Got floor space and a bed for a sturgeon/catfish weekend with the guys.

Where are you planning to fish? Columbia River estuary, upriver, above Bonneville? Do you have an anchor system for your new boat? Oversized or just CnR? I believe the keeper season above Bonneville used to be right about this time of year but its not one I ever partook in, for oversized, wait for the shad to come in. Most guys anchor upriver of a deep hole or slot and let their baits back out behind the boat and into the deep hole, put it in a rod holder and wait. Bring a variety of bait, shad, smelt, anchovies, sand shrimp and whatever else. Bring a variety of weights too, you never know how much you'll need to keep your bait down, 6-24oz should cover you. Be careful, you can't just anchor anywhere in the river where's there's a hole to fish. There are shipping lanes and those freighters won't think twice about running you over! Check out OutdoorGPS to on CSNNW (Comcast ch. 179.) They often talk about sturgeon fishing and even have callers give reports on different parts of the river. Good luck, stay safe, have fun!

Now if you can't get a sturgeon you might as well get rid of that boat. I know you can't catch halibut but sturgeon is a gimme. :chuckle: Have fun!

It dont perticularly matter where I fish, im not picky as long as there is fish to catch

Ribka has a anchor system we will be using.

I dont mind C&R, but I would like to fish for keepers, I have never tried it before, And I have no idea what it taste like  :EAT:

Oh, now the peanut gallery chimes in  :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

and Im planning on putting a few Hali in teh boat this year as well as some lings

You know you can always show me where to catch those chickens you catch  :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

Hey Pete, I can dial you in anywhere on the river from Astoria to above Bonneville Pool - which is currently open right now for retention.  Another fun place is Willamette for C&R, always a good day on that river...  As someone stated make sure - 100% you have a good buoy anchor system..  Add some drift socks when current is flowing or run kicker in reverse to keep you on line...  Depends upon what water but I run as low as 6 ounces of lead all the way to 48 ounces...  Normally 12-14 oz triangles hold most places well..  Slider or swivel for lead.  6/0 hooks - barbless of course.  I have been using large circle hooks sometimes for OS and seem to be working great.    Were heading out this weekend to above Bonneville for some fun and relaxing, going to rain like heck, but supposed to be calm...  Yea right- calm in the Gorge...  I would also be tempted to run to the east side for a weekend trip, as the fish are there for sure, just never fished it...  If your fishing for keepers and below, a decent Ling cod rod will work, as long as it has back bone for if the holy crap OS hits the small bait....   If your going OS, the biggest baddest Halibut rod you got will be good, but if you got bigger that is better.  Want to get those big girls to the boat as quick as possible...  Send me a PM...  Or you can always follow us or tag along one of these trips...  I got into the Sturgeon fishing when I moved down from AK, was bored with "little" Salmon fishing and took a long break from Salmon- lol. It has been one of my favorite things to do - Sturgeon fishing...

I dont plan on hitting it alone  :bdid: gonna get out with guys that know what to do, because I done  :dunno:

Gonna be Feb before I get a free weekend to get out so Im looking for any info to help out untill then.

If you end up with a open seat in your boat some time, give me a shout out, I love learning from the best, thats why O hooked up with Del this summer for ocean salmon. He taught me so much, I cant thank him enough

It's been slim pickings above Bonny so far. Lots of shakers, just a couple keepers.
There must be a place more east that you can get better keeper ratio, but we're I don't know.

Are you talking below Bonneville?  I though you can only keep sturgeon above the dam?

I haven't been sturgeon fishing in years but I remember catching several big boys up to 9' long very close to Beacon Rock about the first week of June when the shad were running strong.  We used whole shad for bait.

Is this "invite'' going out to everyone? I have a place to stay in Tri Cities, but I would definitely love to join this adventure. I would also like to add, that I would make Armenian style bbq for the group. :)

Wet, wet, wet, wet, wet, had to run my bilge three times..  Did I mention wet.  We got a bunch of subs, no keepers.... Worst part canvas has been under cover since Oct and seriously dried and shrunk up, so rain leaked inside about half what it was doing outside...  Once dry again, time to re-coat with some water proofing...  Was a great day anyhow despite of the rain with friends and a great surprise - an old Police friend I didn't know we had mutual friends.  Haven't seen him in 7 years since leaving AK and bam there was as an invite from one of my buddies... Small world..

Tag!! I know a spot or two off White Bluffs, but would love to learn the river off The Dalles or below McNary. A big fish would be nice, but the 50 fish a day stories sound like fun too!!

Yeah ,COHOHO is the man - he is true sturgeon machine fisherman .Fished with him ,his friend and Ripper last year (or was it the year before ? can't remember now) . Can't say where we fished ...you know the rules ,but it was great . I long line released one or two I believe . Found some old pictures from the 2000 (I think) when I did 5 days on the river just catching shad and sturgeon every year -good old days .

We fished last week in the bonny pool and managed one keeper with a ton of shakers.  Too windy to fish our favorite spots. Squid and smelt were the best baits.  You could hold with 8oz easy.

Looking forward to your report.  No sarcasm intended but these fish are in different places different times of the year.  Personally speaking, I struggle with mass amount of shakers early (at times 50:0) but if you keep tabs on the walleye guys, they'll start picking a few up in places that you wouldn't have considered.

Later in the season it really heats up with a much better keeper ratio (if thats what your looking for) to around 75% keepers.

Good Luck!

All this sturgeon talk is making me crazy. If anyone heading on this adventure is coming from Spokane, I have a Freezer full of vacuum packed shad if you want a half dozen.
Good fishing,

Great friends, horrible fishing. I have no idea what I could have done different but I could not and did not produce a sturgeon in two full days. 7 different baits, two stretches of the Columbia, 8 different holes that have produced sturgeon in the past and zero action. It was very mind blowing and humbling for me.

We will get them next time  and I will have to bring the wife so the two women can hang out while we fish.
