Ok, I shot my sidelock last weekend and want to go again on Monday. Something I noticed, when cocking and setting the set trigger it is pretty loud as it goes through the progression of "clicks" setting the sear. Is there any way to quiet this or what technique do you use? The sound would have cost me my buck this year and that would have made me cry. :yike: and that would have been cry worthy.

If deer are really close, I will hold the trigger back as I cock and then release the trigger into the hammer, no click. And, if you are that close, why are you bothering with the set trigger?

moly grease

just hold the trigger back when you cock it. No noise.

OK I have been holding the trigger to set but wondered if there was another way. I was thinking grease but was concerned that it would thicken in the cold and wet.
Loki, can't bank on being that close every time. I am trying to plan ahead.

Getting that close is a mixed blessing, personally, with a ML I prefer about 30 yards unless I'm in a tree stand. The point is that the set trigger is mainly used for target shooting and longggg range shooting where a stiffer trigger pull may get you farther off target. I missed a chance at a shot at a really nive 4X4 BT (only one I have ever seen in WA while hunting) at about 12 yards in heavy reprod because I cocked the gun as I brought it up, CLICK, gone. :( Ever since then, I got in the habit of holding the trigger back when cocking my ML rifle.

Thanks that is my concern. I haven't hunted with the sidelock yet but hope to next season. The way you explained is in line (no pun) with what I was thinking, I was just wondering if I missed something with the set trigger. I am used to double trigger shotguns so I am anticipating a boom when setting the set trigger.

So do you guys hunt with your hammer on half cock? And, I think I can set my rear trigger before I even pull my hammer back right? Can I pull it outta my truck, half cock it, cap it, set the rear trigger, then start hunting? That way, all I'd have to do is full cock and shoot?

When I go hunting, Its called and on half cock. I do not set the trigger until I see game and am ready to take the shot. I wouldnt set the rear trigger until you are ready, regardless of it being on half cock.

In a normal hunting situation - I am not sure you would to have the set trigger 'set'. With my sidelocks and the trigger set - it is really a 'hair trigger' just a slight touch will set it off. I do use the set on long range targets when I am going to use a rest and have time set the shot up.
BUT, to answer your question - on my Renegades with the hammer @ half cock - pull the set trigger - then pull the hammer all the way back - the set is still engaged. If I do not shoot and decide to release the hammer back to half cock - the set is dis-engaged and will need to be re-set.

Thanks guys. I can see where it would be a safety issue if I had the trigger set while walking around, even if its on half cock. I'll check to see if my set trigger disengages if I don't shoot and have to let the hammer down.
