Title: AR-15 advice
Post by: ZEN on January 20, 2015, 08:39:53 PM: Been shooting the M&P15 and a Sig 516 for a while. I'm interested in a more traditional AR setup though, and I want a complete rifle even if it means a little markup. I hunt and shoot a lot in general, (this will not be a deer rifle obviously). I'm looking for a solid fit, durable parts, decent trigger, and moa or better. I'm close to a purchase with Rainier Arms where I've found a few rifles that meet that criteria just fine.

- I might get a Ruc 2 with a match barrel. Maybe as is.
- I also like the BCM Recce KMR15 Mk2 and the 16 KMR13 Precision (I like the possibility to mount sights at 45 degrees on that KMR rail)
- And then they put DDM4's on sale at $1200! (I like the possibility to mount sights at 45 degrees on the V7's rail)

Gotta get iron's on any of em but I have good glass and mounts. Obviously the DDM4 is at an inventory clearing price...but of those rifles, what would you buy?

Thanks for your ideas. I'm monkey minding this one so I'd appreciate any advice from experience.

This investment will hopefully score me a really solid core setup. I'm leaning Ruc 2 but those BCM's got me mixed up.

Post by: aaronoto on January 25, 2015, 09:07:21 AM: Out of those 3 brands I'd go BCM, I had a 14.5" KMR that I should have never sold. Solid gun and the KMR rail felt great in hand. I bought mine from Rainier Arms as well, I'd make a trip down and fondle them all, then pick the one that feels the best to you.

Don't buy into the hype of "my upper/lower is better than theirs"
Uppers, like Barrels are disposable wear items.
Lowers just hold parts in the correct spots.
I wont build another carbine..ever...

For me, it would be a 20" 1/8 twist Bartlein 4 groove chambered in 5.56 in a Mk12 SPR type setup. That way I can get as mush snort out of the little .223 as I can.

If not 223, then 6 Grendel.

Collect parts online as they go on sale (no tax) and you will come out ahead with minimal effort. You also won't end up with a bin of parts after you upgrade this and that.

Post by: ZEN on January 27, 2015, 07:23:19 PM: I'm more drawn to the BCM than the RUC 2. I was gonna swap the CHF barrel for a Match barrel if took the plunge on the RUC 2. No matter what the barrel and trigger are my priority for sure, also a handguard like the kmr with the 45 degree slots that align over the barrel properly is a nice option. I could care less about the roll mark honestly, as long as whoever finished the receivers did a great job.

I've been seriously considering building a gun so I appreciate the encouragement. Putting together a lower and buying a complete upper is on my mind too. Installing the barrel is the part I'm hesitant about but I have a buddy that was an Armorer so he'd be a great partner on a project like this. Any tips about barrel installation would be awesome.

When I price it all out though Rainier I'm still only a couple hundred under a complete rifle but I've got parts in carts at Brownell's, BCM, PSA, WOA. Any other retailers I should be tracking?

edit: I am not seeing those prices at LowPriceGuns btw. What am I missing?
