Please OPPOSE SB 5241 – Concerning Ivory Prohibition

Copy and paste message for the Senate Committee:

Dear Members of the Senate Natural Resources and Parks Committee:

Please OPPOSE SB 5241; it would harm those who have no part in poaching or illegal ivory trade activities. This would include firearm owners, sportsmen, hunters, recreational shooters and gun collectors who have legally purchased firearms (and knives, jewelry and other items) that incorporate ivory features for decades.

Historically, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service maintained the position that most ivory in the U.S. has been legally imported and that its sale in the U.S. did not materially contribute to the illegal ivory trade. Nevertheless, under SB 5241, the import, sale, purchase, barter, and possession with intent to sell of any ivory (defined to include mammoth ivory) or ivory product would be prohibited.  Virtually any lawful item containing any amount of ivory, with very limited and narrow exceptions, would be rendered valueless as it would be a felony for a person to sell it or for another person to buy it.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Copy and paste message for the House Committee:

Dear Members of the House Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee:

Please OPPOSE HB 1131; it would harm those who have no part in poaching or illegal ivory trade activities. You can thank your liberal friends for this!!

Had they flooded the markets with all that impounded tusk instead of burning them :bash: they would have taken the money(only thing that works against criminals)and less animals would have been poached over the years!!

But NOOOO we couldn't do that,  that doesn't give US(liberals) our needed "emotional high" we so desire!!!

It is the same liberal crap as CITES prohibition on spotted cats and polar bears, among the most notable. There is no reason for this sentimental crap. I still love the crap USFWS pulled with the polar bears, "they are not endangered or threatened but if climate change does what some scientists think they will be endangered by 2020" not a quote but hits the premise of their argument. When they crushed all that ivory I felt the same as Timberfaller, what a waste!  And the worst part is that only a portion was actually poached/illegal ivory. There was plenty that had been legal at one point but due to changing laws, rules, and owners ignorance it all the sudden became illegal and therefore destroyable contraband. Personally I am not a fan of ivory but I would sure as hell hunt an elephant if I was rich enough to afford it and be able to eat all in the same year.

I received this last week in response from Ed Orcutt to my email requesting opposition to the HB.

"John,

There are problems with the bill. Good intentions but way to broad and inclusive of ivory from long extinct animals. There will need to be a lot of work done on this before I could support it.

Ed"

Burning was by and large started by Richard Leakey, who I wouldn't easily categorize as a liberal.   Not everything you disagree with is such a black and white - blame the educated liberals issue as you like.
