Title: New to coyote hunting, secured a farmers acreage with coyote problems.
Post by: addicted2hunting on January 24, 2015, 05:40:26 PM: where do I start and learn to hunt these animals? where do I start and best technique for hunting them? This acreage is hundreds of acres and he has a major problem with them killing calves. I have a .270 that I will shoot 130's for them. (I know its a little large for just coyotes but hey?). will getting a fowpro be a good investment? any help is greatly appreciated!

Getting significant control without trapping and many hours of work probably not in the cards. How many cattle? Calving now? All coyotes or dogs too? Open pasture size? Tough habitat for good control.

Post by: Special T on January 24, 2015, 05:58:25 PM: Get a tree stand or 2 up. We're are approaching breeding season so coyote vocals should work. Use the assesses page to find the boundaries and look at Ariel photos. A fox pro is good but a hand call will work great too.

he had one cow drop a calf last week that got taken out. it is pretty open pasture land with patches of timber bordering some reprod patches. Id say a good hundred acres on one pasture and a few other 100 acre pastures as well. I have used the rabbit hand calls before, I called a bear in with one before.

is a good vantage point a spot where I can see multiple timber patches to watch for them to come out of?
tree stands are a big advantage it sounds?
how do you hunt them without a stand?

Interrogation howls or more like a female invitation type of howl?

Look for their entry and exit routes to the area and set up an ambush down wind. Night vision would be a good bet too.

Post by: Special T on January 25, 2015, 08:52:17 AM: The main reason i mention the stand is because if you set them up just inside of the woods you can see a lot more. After you call or shoot one pulling them out into the open is going to be harder. A stand doesn't need to be that high in a tree and if the farmer has an old piece of equipment parked in the edge of the woods that can even be better. Have you walked the woods bordering this place? Is it alder next to the re-prod? do you know where the main game trails are? Those things would help you a lot.

its few hundred acres for each pasture he owns, he rotates them out on each field. a lot of times I don't even see a cow.

Not that I know of. He has been running his cattle farm for a long time. I might ask him though!

He just had like 6 calves drop so I will be going out Saturday to give it a go. I'll let you all know how it goes.
