Title: Mountain yotes
Post by: crabcreekhunter on February 03, 2015, 10:29:13 AM: I've mostly hunted coyotes in the Ag fields and scrub land in the basin and just recently started making a few mountain trips. I've had decent luck not the numbers as the scrub land but they seem to come in hot. So for those with more experience is it usually more productive to call yotes down hill to you or up hill?

I treat it the same as basin hunting.... I will call to cover, drawing the dogs out of their shelter area.

It's still a wind thing, thermals.

Mtnmuley thanks ive called from above and below and so far calling them uphill has been far more productive. Thanks.. And another question for calling bobcats/cougars obviously a lot more difficult but longer calling sequences? Types of calls? Longer stands?

The mom had 4 pups bouncing all around and playing. I was armed only with my Pentax DSLR, so I took a handful of pics & just enjoyed watching them. I was standing at the edge of the road & they were no more than 30 yards away - at one point maybe even down to 20 yards.

I know, Jas. I looked and looked and watched and tried to figure out why she would be so calm around the traffic and number of people that were in the area (maybe 5 or 6 way off behind me). I just wondering if a good coyote tail would be just as nice. Maybe it's a wolf in fox's clothes? :P

Post by: Bofire on March 10, 2015, 06:33:17 PM: :) The only thing I like about calling coyotes when sitting low and calling a hillside above me is many times I can get better visabliity looking up the hill then down, depends on the brush level, especially if you can sit 100 yards away(or more) from the bottom. From the up side any little change in elevation, any little hump, completely covers the coyote.
Sometimes if I can catch them on the up hill side, I can yell at em, and freeze em for a shot, if you know what I mean, and you got a good back stop for the bullet.
