Title: Getting a DD soon.
Post by: at2smithjason on February 04, 2015, 04:39:35 PM
So I have been doing alot of research and I have figured that getting a DD is going to be the way to go for me.  I love the look of them, and how well rounded they are.  I also like the fact that when well socialized they are almost bomb proof.  I really want to talk to some of the DD owners here and see what their experiences are with these dongs and give me some pointers for training.  I am thinking that I am going to be hunting uplands mostly (2 to 3 times a year, work and money permitting).  Thanks!

The funny thing is that I was typing that on a computer.  I think the more appropriate thing to say is damn fat fingers.

My DD is ten months now and is great.very smart! And I have had no issues with being aggressive towards other dogs. This duck hunting season he retrieved at least 150 ducks. He also found allot of crippled ducks that others had wounded and could not find. I watched a guy with a lab try to find a duck he winged for a half a hour and he gave up, took my DD to the spot and he found it in five minutes. I was only able to take him upland hunting once this last season but he caught on to it quickly and even backed my gsp while he was on point.

if you have Facebook check out the drahthaar addiction page.

also check out uplandjournal.com there's a good amount of DD owners on there
any other questions feel free to pm me

Richard, Is yours a true DD from the motherland? Or an american wirehair sold under the auspice of being a Draht? How does yours do with furred critters, cats, squirrels, coons, possums ,small dogs and such. The imported Drahts and Kurzhaars I've been around have been surly tempered and rough on almost anything with a fur coat.Fact is the imported female GSP killed one of it's packmates, an American bred GSP.The german dogs have alot of tenactiy and fight in them in my experiance,I've helped with alot of stitching to get the losers put back together again due to feisty germans.

 :yeah:

Why I prefer the English dogs. Even some of the American bred wirehairs and shorthairs can have a bad demeanor and they are often a guaranteed porcupine or skunk encounter of the worst kind.

Whatever breeder you go with, ask about sharpness, and if the breeder doesn't know what you're talking about run, not walk, away.

He is a true DD, he did not come from the motherland but all of his lines are from DD's that passed the hunt test required. He is fine with all dogs but any other furred animals would be a problem.
he has a great temperament.

I am 100% sure he is a DD and not a gwp. He has the tattoo for the German breeding registry.

Send board member Lee Root a message. He and Roger Green breed DD's, train, and run VDD tests.

If you're on the wet side, there's almost always some DD's or DK's running in the NAVHDA tests as well, May or September near Chehalis. I'd send an e-mail to the chapter making sure of who/what is running on a particular day before I drove down though.

You may also find www.versatiledogs.com (http://www.versatiledogs.com) to be able to fill you in a bit more if you're still researching, as it's a versatile dog specific site. Lee is on there as well.

Best of luck!
