Title: How loud are those Cabela's generators?
Post by: turkeyfeather on February 18, 2015, 03:38:28 PM
We just purchased our first travel/camp trailer and I am looking at generators to run the power when we are at hunting camp. I know what many of you are gonna say.....get a Honda or Yamaha. And someday when I am made of money I will do that.  :chuckle:  I see these 3500w ones from Cabela's at a good price and they seem to have great reviews so I am wondering from those that may have some experience with them about the noise level. My research shows that they are slightly quieter than a vacuum cleaner. Is this overly obnoxious in the woods or a campground?

Is it the yellow one made by "Champion"?

if you can afford it get a good one.  I bought a cheap one and it lasted less than a year.    mike w

I'm pretty sure they're from Champion. OK quality, but loud. If you're going to have electronics running off it, get one that has an inverter. The power from the innovator generators is much more stable and doesn't damage electronics like the non inverter units can. If you look around, I bet you can find a 2,000 watt unit for only a little more than the price of that champion unit.  2,000 watts ran my entire travel trailer, including the air conditioner.

I saw some in the General Store the other day for what seemed like a decent price. I am not in the market for one, so I didn't pay them a lot of attention (actual price, brands, etc), but it may be worth looking into.

I have checked a few pawn shops but that great of a price on one yet. Some of you other guys missed the part where I said I can't afford a Honda. Unless your willing to pitch in for it.  :chuckle:

I own a champion 3500/4000.  Tractor supply has great prices.  There are 4-5 different models of same unit.  I bought the model with RV plug and 220/110volt.  It is great on gas, runs my 27tt with ac flawless.  Tank of gas runs average 10+hours easy.  68dbs.  I barely hear it inside trailer and its under slideout when raining.  Not quiet like Honda but still the quietest regular style genny I have been around.  3 years old and not a lick of trouble.  I paid 299 when I ordered it.  Built my own cart/wheel kit for it.  Trick for camping is too build a box to sit over it with end open for exhaust using 2" pink dow foam board and duck tape with a weight of some sort.

I have one of those yellow champion generators in 3500W from Cabelas.  Bought it for when the power goes out in the winter.  I've had it two years, ran it probably 250-300hrs, and have nothing but positive things to say about it.  Starts first pull every time, keeps our freezer and refrigerators going and allows us to watch TV when the power is out.  I've never heard a honda, so I have nothing to compare it to.  It's somewhat noisy I guess, I can't hear it when it's outside and we're inside our house though.

Not sure which ones cabelas has but if they are the Champion ones  I like mine it is a 9000 watt duel fuel so it is going to be louder than a 3000 or 3500 watter and am pleased with it.  MY suggestion is get the biggest and best one you can afford, can double up as home generator if needed Mine can run the entire house when power is out as was the experience this past summer during the fires, Plus I ran power to 2 neighbors refrigerators

I did homework and all reviews were great.  Quality is good.  Nothing bad to say.  We run electronics off ours with no issues but we arent talking computers and smart tvs.  30amps is the magic needed for RV AC units.  Below that is not enough.  Also to load genny towards max levels like smaller units will suck the gas.  My champion out powers Honda 2000I and the honda (smaller tank) runs out of fuel first.  Buddy brought his new honda 2 years ago, it kept dying when ac kicked on.  Result was we put it away and ran the champion.  Honda great but too small.  Added bonus of 220v is I can power my house lightly and if I need the well I can make it work.  Also Welders in the field.

I agree, that is why I dont set camp by others but prefer our own spots of solitude.  Not looking for a social gathering but quite the opposite.  Im pleased you think our 15 year old rv and 300$ genny is "New and Fancy". :chuckle:

I have one 3500/4000. Ran it during a power outage. It ran 2 fridges and a freezer, my TV/Internet and furnace. Runs great. a little loud. But, for the price I can live with it. I bought it on a Black Friday sale from Cabelas for $269 plus tax. I feel a scored for the value to cost.

I have a 35' fifth wheel single AC unit that we use all the time for camping and hunting.  I have 3 different generators around the place.  One Honda 2000, and two Pacific made in china ones for the house.  One is a 7500 gas and one a 6500 diesel.  I would never in the world try to take one of the bigger ones camping or hunting.  We have been using the Honda for the last 12 years or so and it runs flawless.  It will NOT run our AC but will run the microwave.  we normally have a couple strings of compact flourescent lights going in a wall tent and then also charging the batteries on the trailer and running the gas heater during hunting on the low idle feature.  We also let it idle all night during elk hunting and run the gas furnace in the trailer to sleep in.  If it is just for camping and you want AC get a 3000W with low idle control, if you don't need AC get a 2000 with idle control.  The 2000w ones are quite a bit smaller and easy to throw around.

There are currently some really nice 2000W Hondas on Craiglist for $800 or less.

I'll take a used Honda over a new Champion every time.

My sister and brother in law have a 3500W Champion. I cringe every time they want to break it out.  Its a loud POS.

Well unfortunately a 2000w doesn't do me much good if it won't run the a/c.

Those 3500 are louder than the Honda but if it's just for hunting camp get a 100ft or longer extension cord and run it out aways and put exhaust away from camp. Even helps a lot leaning a board against it between camp and the genny. I have a Honda 2000 that charges batts and runs microwave. Who needs AC up dry camping.

:) I bought a Craftsman generator 3500 off craigs list about 10 years ago. It is loud but it works great. starts every time. I paid $125.00. I bet it is about the same as a Champion. $1000-2000 for a "quiet" small generator is just stupid in my opinion.

I hear ya but seems a bit dumb to me to have a/c and not be able to use it.

How often do you think you will use the AC when camping any ways  :dunno:

I have had a camper with AC for 12 years and have yet to need or use my AC while camping and I do the majority of my camping in the east side of the state.  :twocents:

I personally dont have a use for more then a 1000w gen. My first camper had no microwave or AC. when I got my second camper I got one with both and have not used either yet, What a waste of money  :bash: :bash: :bash: again, my  :twocents:

Over half my cooking is done outside over an open fire and the gen is used to charge my batt and run my CPAP at night.

What about the Costco Smarter Tools that is 2000 watt anyone use one of those?  3 year warranty and of course anything from Costco comes with their backing.. I don't really think AC will be ran in our trailer when remote since cools off really fast but the wife or kids may want to watch a movie before bed and for charging batteries..
