Title: New Hunting Bike
Post by: WapitiTalk1 on February 19, 2015, 08:28:24 AM
James from Poison Arrow Gear (makes the coolest quiver mounted decoy out there) posted this on the Elknut forum.  He saw this beast while attending the Western Hunter's Expo.  Thought I'd share it with you Hunt WA cats.

More than a bit pricey but quite the machine don't ya think  8)

RJ that is an interesting find.  To be sure, there are a lot of fire roads behind gates where this would come in handy (I am not a mountain rockstar like LoJack  :chuckle:, so the electric power could really help).  However, where I go mechanized equipment of all type is banned, so this would be of no help.  Also, what would you do if the battery died way back in Forgotten Land?

I like the paint job, however.

Very cool!   Good to know Felt's owner is pro hunting. I haven't researched many bike company owners backgrounds but I have to imagine most aren't pro hunting.

No front suspension and a base model starting at $5,499  :yike:

I do like the trailer though...

I got to try out the moonlander and  Pug SS while  in Pemberton BC last year. I was really surprised how great they were since i am used to a bike with front suspension. The fat tires and low PSI allow those bikes to go places you wouldnt think. I talked to the owner of the bike shop and he said he road it 5 miles though 1-2 ft of snow on 5lbs and it was awesome. I would also add that when i rode it at 10-12lbs you could hardly hear the thing on gravel no crunching going on. Add to that the abilityto increase the PSI to 30 and the weight rating for that bike is awesome.

Great bikes dont run cheep

That is a sweet looking setup!   If I hunted behind gates, I would figure out a way to save for this!

Interesting information on the drive unit... I couldnt find if it had regenerative charging like if you were going downhill coasting.... does it charge the pack some? Cool concept becoming more commone and likely to have a huge effect on the industry.

I've never paid much attention to bikes, but think I'll end up getting one in a few months  to help get in better shape, I plan on using it for hunting as well, of the new areas I plan on hunting dictate the use that is.

Oh and I won't be spending this kind of money lol, I'm thinking 800 max.

As great as they are, aren't there motor restrictions in wilderness areas? Do they apply to electric motors? Wouldn't that suck, here you are thinking you're going to be able to get away from ATVs and jeeps only to find your electric bike is illegal too.  Let me know if I'm wrong here...

You can't have wheeled anything in the wilderness.

Non-motorized means no motors!

300 win mag you're absolutely correct.  Goes to show I don't visit wilderness areas.  Here is what the forest service has on the interweb:
Motorized and mechanized equipment
Motorized and mechanized equipment are not allowed, including drones (see below), bicycles, carts, wagons, chainsaws, hang gliders and off-road vehicles and other wheeled vehicles. Landing aircraft, air dropping or picking up supplies, materials or people are prohibited.
Public use of drones (including quadcopters, model aircraft and other unmanned aerial systems) is increasing in popularity. However, drones are motorized equipment and are prohibited in wilderness. Please help us protect wilderness character by leaving your drone at home when you visit a congressionally designated wilderness area. Federal regulation 36 CFR 261 18a states that the following are prohibited in a National Forest Wilderness:(a) Possessing or using a motor vehicle, motorboat or motorized equipment except as authorized by Federal Law or regulation.(b) Possessing or using a hang glider or bicycle.(c) Landing of aircraft, or dropping or picking up of any material, supplies, or person by means of aircraft, including a helicopter.

Im at the show as well,  this bike looks really put together well.  The electric motor will only work for u as an assist.  Theres no throttle, you have to pedal everywhere u go.  The electric motor will assist in the work.  If the bike lost charge u could still pedal it.  They do have front suspension and rear on the seat post as an option.   This miight be an option for me if i ever draw a moose tag.   :chuckle:

In particular, drones are not legal [because] "However, drones are motorized equipment and are prohibited in wilderness." But bicycles are not legal because.....why? And carts/wagons? It's also interesting that back-country ski equipment is every bit as "mechanized" as a bicycle, and ski equipment is allowed but bicycles are not.

Fat bikes are cool. They were originally designed for use in the snow. Using one on trails or logging roads.... idiotic. Trust me, as a Dude who has raced mtb for years and is a lifetime bike rider, they are way more work/effort than your standard mtb. Looks cool. Completely ridiculous to use hunting. Unless you are hunting in deep snow.

Yeah they're more work, but you can probably tube behind a motorboat with those tires. :chuckle:
