Title: Bear rug issues
Post by: teanawayslayer on March 04, 2015, 07:26:22 AM: So I got my bear rug back several moths ago. When I picked it up it looked great! Besides a few bald spots that I don't remember being there. That's why I rugged it it had a perfect hide. What ever it is what it is. After being hung on the wall now for several months there is a white residue coming through. Almost like salt, it is not oily but more of a powder after you wipe it off. I asked my taxi if I could put black shoe polish on it. He said go ahead. So I did and it looked fine for about 3 weeks. Then what ever it is, is now coming back through. He said that he has never had an issue like this before. Any thoughts?

First off
IF the bald spots that you don't remember being there are in the armpit and groin area they are perfectly normal. Most taxidermists will use skin dye in theses areas to hide the sparsely haired area. When properly skinned the arm pits will be just below the forelegs and the crotch pits will be just above the hind legs. If the bald spot is somewhere else I haven't a clue.

I've been tanning for about 15 years and the first thing that I would suspect the powder is would be sodium bicarbonate which is used to neutralize the hide after pickling. Its possible that it could be salt because salt is used in every step of the tanning process. I.m curious if the hide was commercially tanned or tanned by the Taxidermist. I would never tan a carnivore myself and tanneries have specialized equipment to ensure the hides are properly washed and cleaned before shipping them out. whatever it is its not normal but may not mean the rug is damaged just not properly washed. :twocents:

He said he would call his rugger and ask him. I'm just wanting to see if any one might have some ideas why. Your explanation makes since. Thank you

If it is salt or sodium bicarb as I suspect vacuum the area as needed and it will eventually stop. If the flanks have not been dyed it can still be done but extreme care needs to be used to make sure the padding, backing and felt are not damaged in the process.

Post by: carpsniperg2 on March 04, 2015, 06:14:01 PM: Kuduman is spot on with the arm pits and groin areas. I have a very lush bear hide and was perfect. The armpits and flank areas are a little thin on the rug but the dye used make it look good.

As far as the power IDK. Never had any of ours do that.
