Title: Rust in shotgun magazine tube -- what would you do?

So I have a Benelli Nova 12 gauge pump action shotgun that has been quite good to me for the six or so years I have owned. After it getting dunked/swamped on several occasions and me not properly cleaning the mag tube-- I have some rust in there. The gun functions fine- it can cycle shells ok and fires fine but I am a bit concerned.... it does seem a little harder to feed shells in there and what if it gets worse?

What would you guys do in my position? Would you not worry about it so much? Replace that part of the shotgun entirely? Or somehow try to get it repaired? On the last one I did call a place in Granite Falls that was recommended on this site and the guy at the shop said he could get in there with a knuckle brush, polish it out and then finally apply some Duracoat to the mag tube to prevent rust from forming. What all do you think about that as an option? I have heard mixed reviews on Duracoat.

Post by: CP on March 06, 2015, 01:04:07 PM: Clean the rust out with a brush and oil but don’t strip it to the bare metal and don’t coat it with anything. Then clean the oil out. This will leave a protective layer of patina behind which will help prevent rust from reforming.

Post by: Chesapeake on March 06, 2015, 08:03:13 PM: Last section of cleaning rod in drill with bore brush wrapped in steel wool. Clean it to a good polish. If pitted maybe apply birchwood rust remover. If no pits then skip as that stuff will strip any blueing.
Then use 99% IPA to remove all oils. Then blue it with birchwood super blue. Be careful, the stuff is metal eating acid.
Then coat it well with "corrosion-x" and make sure to keep it clean and oiled. It will rust easier after home blueing than it did with the factory finish.
May need to address the spring as well.
That's what I'd do, but I ain't no gunsmith......

Post by: jasnt on March 06, 2015, 08:15:29 PM: I've had rust in mine as well. Dismantle the tube and scrub it out with a brush. 10ga brush works well. Then oil it with a rag. I now clean mine out about twice a year

Post by: lokidog on March 06, 2015, 08:52:52 PM: Mine rusted up pretty badly as well. I just used the biggest brush in my kit (10g?) and some steel wool. I just run an oily rag through it now every couple of wet hunts as needed.

If its bad, maybe a ball hone in a power drill?

That's what we would use back when I lived on the coast. Worked like a charm!! :tup:

What did you use as an extension or could you hit it all from both ends.?

Post by: RadSav on March 14, 2015, 09:06:04 AM: My guns it was easy to remove the tube and then hit one side and then the other. My brother had a gun it wasn't so easy so he just bought a drill bit extension from True Value. Had a hole in the end with a little set screw.
