Went out to pull some trail cams last Friday and found this little guy all caught up in a fence. We got him freed up and back with mama, but man I can't believe how bad the ticks were. I know they're hard on the moose but I'd never seen them up close like that. The pics are just of around his neck and shoulder, his other side and back end were just as bad.
Hope he makes it through.(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ftapatalk.imageshack.com%2Fv2%2F15%2F03%2F16%2F53959bb87bcec7b3c8d8d5ab2d809b70.jpg&hash=0fe7cb5fdfc248f4498a0f3d096611a742a3623e)

Wow, that is insane.
-
Oh my :yike: that's terrible
-
Ummm..... I just changed my mind... I don't want to hunt moose anymore.
:o
-
I thought it was dead in that first pic.... OMG, those ticks are soooo disgusting! :puke:
-
You want to tell me that this thing is still alive ?????? :puke:
-
that moose will likely die from the ticks...its a big concern for moose. We are starting to see moose on cams now with large amount of ticks :(
-

Its not really alive its just the ticks keeping it moving like a puppet so it just looks alive !! Thats pretty damn yucky

He was alive last time I saw him but to be honest I'd be real surprised if he made it much longer. Like Shane said, the ticks can be real hard on them especially the young ones. After we freed him up he didn't even have enough energy to jump the fence. He just layed there for about an hour. We got him up again and through a gate so he could get across the road to mama, as soon as he crossed the road he layed down in the ditch again and wouldn't cross the other fence. We took the second fence down and got him through that and he again only went about 10 yds and layed down. We left him alone there and the cow came down and joined him. I checked on my way back a few hours later and they were both gone.

My moose had the most ticks of any animal I've seen it was pretty nasty.
-
Thank you Elkslayer for helping that moose.
Another great action from a hunter.

That mama moose must have known you were there to help. Real odd for her not to come at you and defend the little one? Good work!
-
Wow, that is awesome you were able to free him.
That is a load of ticks. I have never seen that many on an animal
-
Good for you for helping! I wonder if putting some advantage on him would have help his situation? Spring bear is gonna be interesting this year, man I hate those bugs.
-
GROSS! Poor little guy!
-
Too bad you didn't have a tube of Ivermectin 1.87% to dose him with. Or some Frontline. Sheesh.

Could have sprayed him down with some permethrin too. I feel bad for that little guy.

Good god kill it with fire
-
Makes me sick. That is going to be a slow horrible death. :'( Too bad that kind of thing is not happening to the wolves.
Now my head itches. I would like to unsee that now, thank you >:(

Without having a cold winter we are going to have areally nasty flea and tick year. Protect your animals and yourself while out and about this year.

I tend to agree but I've been surprised before.

Just wait until you cut one open & find the big white leach like things in the guts. Just ignore them, the meat is wonderful :chuckle:

I got a tick in February this year. On the wetside. Still haven't got another but the one that did get me was almost under the skin. I had to squeeze him out then try to pull him with the tweezers. Ever time the tweezers slipped off his legs would get to moving and he would burrow back into my side. Eeeeweeeeeewwwwweeewwww!!!!

I didn't realize ticks burrowed past their mouth parts (head).
-
Yeah they'll go deep. I have seen a documentary about moose and ticks are a big problem. This year will be rough.

While tweezers are recommended over matches, gas and petroleum jelly they are not ideal as most will force fluid into the host. I had my vet order me a pair of blunt, medium-tipped, angled forceps which not only she, but a number of doctors I've talked with over the years have recommended. If you have a good medical supply store close they should have them as well. Then if the head comes off I then use very pointed tweezers to extract what is left.
They are good for pulling fish hooks out of hands and heads too :chuckle:
