Title: A Flintlock project!
Post by: MountainDevil54 on March 23, 2015, 05:49:13 PM
Got her in today. Someone it looks like, converted a percussion to a flintlock and I dont trust these types of mods, So I will upgrade to a new .54cal flinter barrel and be happy, knowing that shes safe and no bubba worked on it. The vent hole you see is just way to friggin huge. The good part, the pan is as center with the vent hole as you could ask for.

With a french amber flint, the lock throws a ton of sparks into that pan that bounce around sizzling.

Stock also has a ton of wood grain and when I refinish it, I'll do my best to make it pop.

I think its a beauty the way it is.There really isnt any risk in putting a flintlock on a capped muzzy.Shoot away,As long as the barrel is tight to the stock your good.

That vent is perfect.  Be patient, don't overprime it.  Most guys think they need a bucket full of 4f to make sure it works.  That slows it down and burns your eyebrows off, ha ha.  Hence the nickname flinchlock.  I've hunted with flinters since the early 1980's, love them.  You need a strong mainspring, hard frizzen, and good flint.  Lots of sparks and you are in business.  Practice, practice, practice to get used to the lock time.  Enjoy it, most guys won't have what it takes to hunt with one so consider yourself a rare commodity if you do.  Ha!

YEP Just Like   RG said no need for a bunch of powder in the pan.   just a little will sure kick it off  long as your getting all that kind of spark    .be looken forward to see how your turn around comes along on this one liked the other you did some time back hope this turns out as good if not better  keep us posted

its not the vent itself but the fact someone converted it and then used JB weld on the threads to seal it. I took a screw driver bit, and the gap between the barrel and vent liner itself is jb weld! The vent hole is HUGE, 1/16th is normal, this is probably just under 7/64" which is massive.

I would have to agree , dont know as if I would really want to trust the JB weld  in the modification  as well . :yike: you have a better look at it then we do looking at the pictures .best thing to do is trust you own judgement on this  and how much you want to put into going over it  .some times better to just start off anew

you might just want to pull the liner and check it out. A totally of the wall guess would be that, assuming it didn't start out as flint, and it looks like it did, would be that someone replaced the liner with a SAE threaded liner when it should have been metric.

No biggy, simple fix.
