So, I want to buy cheap plinking ammo for my AR-15, and I keep seeing this really cheap Wolf ammo.
It's polymer coated steel cased.
ill shooting a bunch of this do damage to an AR??
thanks,
Dan

I would think that it should be fine. Might need more cleaning though.
-
I've shot a few hundred rounds out of a case of the plinking .223 ammo and haven't had a single problem.
-
I would run it through an AK, but not an AR. yes, be ready to clean more if you do.
-
Thanks.
I was more worried about whether the steel cases would do more damage to the throat of the barrel??????

I've shot thousands of rounds of wolf steel cased ammo through AR's. Only problem is that it turns a AR into a AK, accuracy wise. OK for plinking and for fun. :twocents:

NO! Steel cased ammo is covered in Lacquer. If you heat the gun up it will stick to everything It may be OK in a bolt gun, OR if you are not shooting much to heat the gun up. but once you do, you will need to clean it up bad.
AKs chew that stuff up. ARs do not.

I read a endurance comparison between 2 differnt kinds of steel cased and 2 brass cased 223 on DPMS rifles 20k Steel cased wore barrels out quicker and had more malfunctions than brass.
-
Totally depends on the rifle, if you have a high end AR, no don't do it. If your shooting a $6-700 AR and just want to burn ammo (plink), go for it.
You will have to clean more and yes if you shoot it enough it will cause chamber wear but if the rifle is for plinking, just shoot the steel case and save a pile of money.

I won't run much and I'll clean every time. Man I miss the days of 1000 ak rounds just to burn through. I have a colt le and it has only ever had one problem, it was the bolt not grabbing the spent shell. It hasn't done it since. Might take it out today.

Run it!!!
It's an AR, it's supposed to get beat up!! it's a weapon of war for goodnes sake.
dont clean it unless there is a shift in POA, or you start getting malfs. Barrels and uppers are wear items.
I have a RRA with the adams arms piston that will eat anything..it dont care....its like the energizer bunny...55's, 77's. it's a machine!!

After my big NO i noticed an add for nickel coated steel cased 223 ammo. Im guessing that stuff isnt coated lacqure. It will still make it wear quicker but may not gum up the works.
-
I would.
It's also an excuse to build a second(or ahem.....3rd) upper using one of the many cheap barrels on the market.

My Cuz just got some nickle plated for his upcoming P-dog shoot so ill have to let you know how it turned out.
