Just ordered an icebreaker merino wool t-shirt off camofire. I'm pumped to get it. The deal was really good.
I looked into the icebreaker brand and I really like what I read.
Anyone else use icebreaker merino base or outer layers? If not, what brands do you use/like and why? Best value, best performance?

I have 3 Icebreaker shirts. All 1/4 zip. One is a 250 weight. The other two are identical 150 weight shirts. The first 150 weight lost its ability to repel smells. Worn too much I think. I've even taken to bleaching it with colorfast bleach, but it still stinks after one day. When it was new, I could wear it for a week without much smell. Obviously, I liked it enough to replace it with the identical shirt. I'll cut the sleeves off the stinky one and use it for long days of packing in and out when I'm not really hunting.

You'll like there line. I have a long sleeve tee, gloves and merino loft jacket. All products.

Good to hear. I was thinking if I liked this shirt I may grab a couple of those 1/4 zip long sleeves. Thanks guys.

I haven't used any of the Icebreaker stuff but I have had great luck with the Filson mid weight long johns. I own several top and bottom sets. The oldest has three hard use winters and was still keeping me warm up until the weather changed a few weeks back.

do these shirts make you itch at all,I say this because most wool drives me nuts...sounds like a good product

I love my core4element merino wool base layers. Super soft. I wear against skin with no itching. Just make sure u don't dry in the dryer.

I have the icebreaker base layer from cabelas it wrks great very warm and no itching

Love Icebreaker Merino. Kryptek on the other hand is garbage, and if you buy it on Camofire they will not warranty it. Poorest customer service I have ever experienced :bash:

I have some icebreaker. The only thing I dont like about it is that it cant go in the drier. For that reason I prefer first lite.
Ive also tried kuiu and smartwool. Smartwool is not durable and kuiu was rough and a pita to wash.

I have a few core4element pieces, 1 kuiu shirt and 2 redington shirts(dirt cheap at fly shop) and have a first lite set on the way.
The core4 pieces aren't itchey but the kuiu shirt is and smells funny when you wash it. I only hang dry them so they don't shrink. The best ones I have are the redington ones, got them on clearance for $10 bucks a pop a few years ago and they don't itch or smell ever.
I'll report back after I get the first lite set, they supposed to be the pioneer of merino for hunting so I have high expectations.
I 2nd the terrible kryptek service, I will never buy anything Kryptek again after talking with them on the phone.

First lite. Like the pattern for sept archery elk backpacking trips. Doesn't stink up bad like polyesters do. For one day trips I use the poly stuff, much cheaper to replace. The wool is warmer and feels nicer but does take more time to dry out.

i really like merino. its great for my multi day trips as it really does help with the stink. im a big sweater. it wicks well, dries relatively fast. my biggest complaint is its not even close as durable as a synthetic shirt. im averaging about a season on a merino shirt and theyre damn expensive. ive used icebreaker, minus33, smartwool, firstlite, kuiu etc.

I bought my first set of first lite three years ago. I won't go hunting without it now.
