Title: Questions on tackle for Alaska fishing
Post by: Bmcox86 on March 29, 2015, 11:37:04 AM
Since I'm moving to Alaska this summer and should have the opportunity to fish a lot I want to see if I have the right tackle. Will be halibut fishing a few times a month and have some great salmon fishing close by. Is what I have listed below enough to get me started? If so what lb test should I have on the halibut and salmon stuff? Mono or braid? Any reccomendations for some terminal tackle I should stock up on before I move?

I have two senator 4/0 with stout rods
2 9ft salmon rods with shimano 4000 class reels
I also have a few medium heavy 7ft rods with bait runners on them
2 heavy Shimano jigging rods with 12000 spheros and 80lb power pro
9ft 8wt sage

Thanks in advance

I would say braid of the heavy sort.  The currents can get really strong there when the tide starts pulling all that water from fjords and islands.  Usually have to use a lot of weight.

Looks like a good set up for fishing.  It all depends on how you want to fish though. Some. Lik e. Using downriggers, some divers, others like to mooch, then there's bouncing the bottom with heavy weight for the halis. A lot will depend on the boat set up and area.

Now to show how little you need. We were fishing off the rocks near Ketchikan with our spendy spinning and casting outfits and some little 8 year old kid with a Sponge Bob closed face reel and 3 foot rod was reeling in all kinds of silvers and pinks. We almost tossed him in each time he yelled out for his brother that he had another one on.

Sounds like your in good shape to me.  A little bit of everything to get you started.  You will find your groove and refine your tackle needs as you go.  Like here, there is virtually every type of fishing available in AK, depending on your location.

The 8 wt Sage might be too light for Kings, but it would be fun to give it a workout nonetheless.  Have fun!  Keep us updated.
