Got a call from my aunt tonight that she has a friend with a Coyote problem. As far as I know these yotes haven't been hunted because they have a lot of property that the yotes can roam around on and it hasn't been hunted. So, would I be better off using pup sounds or rabbit distress sounds, and what kind of calling sequence (how long to run the sound or do you just run it until something comes in)? I have a foxpro and some hand calls, not sure which one I will use. Just getting started at all this, so I appreciate any/all tips. Thanks.

If you're pretty sure they've never been called before I'd start with the basics. Rabbit distress.
If you're talking about a localized place where they're really aclimated, then I'd start by planning how you're gonna call next time in a different spot with a different approach and a different sound. Plan out several approaches that they won't see as related. Then you can hit 'em 2 or 3 times over a week or so and won't have to let the place cool down too much.

Thanks. Do you think a decoy would be needed at all?
-
All depends on the stand. If you're hand calling they can be very helpful.
-
Thanks.
I talked to my aunt today more about the problem, and I guess the yotes will come stand basically on the back patio out by the hot tub. The yotes have also eaten all but 2 cats (one of the ladies had 6 to start with), and one of the two cats will no longer go outside. The yotes have also attacked one of their dogs, so it sounds like they are hungry and should come flying in to the sound of a dying rabbit. I can't wait to go in the morning. :IBCOOL:

This sounds like good advice and is kinda how I approached hunting some coyotes in what sames like the same kind of situation. . .aclimated to people. . .used to the smell, used to people coming and leaving the house at the same time. . .eating the chickens, ducks, and geese. . .reliably showing up nightly, etc.

See above. . .very similar situation. . .don't be surprised if it doesn't work the first time or two out though. . .I went out 3 times in a row showing up before the one would leave for work (3 AM) and getting set up so that I would be already set and in my spot about 20 minutes before he would leave the house. . .and I never even saw a coyote. . .I tried setting up in the duck/goose pen. . .I tried setting up by their garbage barrels (away from the house where they were known to eat the garbage). . .I tried setting up in the dog run between the goose/duck pen and the chicken pen. . .even had the chickens doing all the calling for me. . .they made noises all night long and I never saw a single coyote. . .I'm not too frustrated though. . .now that I'm back in town I'm gonna try to head out there again. . .I think part of the problem was the weather. . .this was in the middle of all of the snowing. . .when it was actively snowing and I have learned since then that yotes don't necessarily like to go out and about in the actual snow. . .so I'll try again. . .probably Sunday and hope for a rainless day (for the coyotes sake. . .not mine. . .I also heard that they move around less on rainy days than clear days. . .go figure that they yotes would be pickier than I am!!!)
Good luck!!!

If they are eating house cats, try a "feline in distress call".

I was thinking the same thing.

That's why I was happy to let the chickens do all the "clucking for me". . .the first night they weren't making any noise and I wasn't set up to view them anyway so I tried some rabbit distress with no luck. . .the next night I tried woodpecker. . .no luck. . .and the last time I went the chickens did it all for me, but still no luck!!!
I blame my lack of luck on the weather though. . .sometimes they just don't show!!!

Went out this morning and set the foxpro out in front of us about 60 yards playing the cottontail in distress sound. Within two minutes we had two yotes coming in. They stopped at about 100 yards but they were in a field on the other side of a treeline that was impossible to shoot through. I thought they were going to cirlce around and come into an opening just past the call, but we never saw them again. Not sure what went wrong. We are going to go back out tomorrow and try again. Is there somewhere I can download a feline in distress sound? Also, when you see them coming, do you change you calling at all or just let it keep running? I also found out they have never been called before, but the landowner has done some shooting at them in the past. It was pretty cool to see them coming in like that. I just hope we can get at least one of them down.
I will have to swing by and get that call from ya Rick...maybe tomorrow afternoon?

Thanks guys. I think I found one that sounds good. The only thing I'm still a little unsure about is how long to run the call....do I just run it until something comes in or do I pause for a little in between? Thanks.
-
keep it going. i dont like to stop it let it go wich Foxpro do you have. around i run mine from 18 to 28 on loudness.Rick

I just have the FX3.

I have the occ open country custom Foxpro. the remote go's up to 40 for loudneness plus it tell's me how long i've been on stand. kinda nice. wedsday i'll have a fury. Rick

Rick, let us know what you think of that new remote with the Fury. It looks a little awkward to me. :dunno:
-
Antler shed split up, have one shooter watching the caller and one a ways away where they can see down wind. I would keep calling but might turn it down a little. just my idea. good luck
